Where to watch in Riga

If you’ve just realised that you won’t be watching the World Cup in your neighbourhood pub in Liverpool, London or Timbuktu, don’t panic. There are plenty of places to see your favourite footballers lose to the Brazilians right here in Riga. The following will definitely show all of the action:

Barons: The food can be a bit pricey, but three floors of dining and drinking space and a good selection of local beer are major draws. A huge screen is available in the main hall and you can take advantage of their summer terrace on the second floor at the end of each half.

De Lacey’s: A good selection of beer and tasty, relatively inexpensive food are great reasons to come here, but it only has a few TVs, so you’ll have to arrive early to get a good seat.

Dickens: Dickens offers a great selection of foreign beer and some of the best pub food in town, including fish and chips and a huge breakfast, but they don’t have many TV screens so you might end up watching the back of someone’s head instead of the game. Get here early to stake your claim on a prime position.

El Čarlito: Watch all of the action indoors or on its excellent summer terrace as you order Tex-Mex, steaks or one of the best burgers in town, not to mention tequila.

Forum Cinemas: Watch all of the action live on the big screen at Riga's largest cinema. Tickets cost 2Ls and, unlike the actual World Cup venues, it serves beer.

Optibet: Nearly a dozen TV screens (some at the end of private booths), Latvian and Czech draught beer and an inexpensive breakfast make this place an obvious choice for football fans. You can also bet on all of the matches at the cashier’s by the entrance.

Paddy Whelan’s: A great selection of foreign and domestic beer is available, but show up early to grab a table, because the word is out that Paddy’s is probably the best place in town to watch sports.

Stella Pub: Both locations offer Belgian, Czech and Latvian beer but the one on Dome Square has better views of the TVs and the one on Lāčplēša is cheaper. The food may seem pricey, but you won’t think so after you’ve seen the size of the servings. Good for non-smokers.



heard it mentioned before so I suppose the Irish bar looks a favourite for me or Carlito's for second choice - any other opinions?
