Tracing a player??

I'm looking for some help in how to go about trying to find out more information about a former Hibs player.

He's listed on the official site under the history section, caps.

I'm wanting to find out more info on the player J. Main who was capped once for Scotland in 1909, it says he had no other clubs.
He shares my surname which isn't a very popular name in Scotland and I was wondering if he's maybe a relative(long shot but ye never know)

I have e-mailed the club already looking for help, anyone any other ideas?

thanks

I think you will find Main is a more common name than you think? Which Hibs books have you tried, I will have a look through any you haven't?

Re: Tracing a player??

I have read Alan Lugtons book - Making of Hibernian Part 1 but don't remember any mention of him in there. Thats the only historical Hibs book I have read pertaining to that period of Hibs history.

It's a fairly common surname in Moray where my grandfather was from but other than that I don't think it's that common really.

thanks 1875

Re: Tracing a player??

Jimmy Main died as a result of injuries sustained in a game playing for Hibs in 1909 IIRC.

I think it might be mentioned in Lugton II.

Re: Tracing a player??

If it's any help he was born in West Calder on 29th May 1886.

As Bobby says he died on 29th December 1909 from internal injuries following a collision at Firhill against Partick Th on the christmas day.

Re: Tracing a player??

Jimmy Main died of injuries received playing for Hibs AGAINST Partick thistle in 1909(xmas day IIRC). I visited his grave a couple of years ago. He is buried in the west lothian village of West Calder and there is a memorial from Hibs at the grave.

Re: Tracing a player??

thanks for all the info guys, I've not read Part 2 of Lugtons triology. Thats sad what happened to Jimmy Main.

If he's born(& buried) in West Calder then he's not related through my dad's side of the the family as they're all from Moray.
Although strangely enough my aunt & uncle on my mum's side are from West Calder!!

thanks again for the info
