Purple & Green has a spectacular aura about
hibs v celtic - both wearing home strips?

When was the last time it happened, or alternatively, when did it stop?

My best guess is 1991/1992: adidas SKOL cup winners tops when our away top was white with green sleeves. Or did Celtic just wear their away tops in all meetings back then?

Think that Celtic first started wearing their away tops when Roughie was in goals, certainly the first time I remember them doing so

I remember the game you are talking about: Hibs won 3-1, Duff n Gray in charge, Gordon Hunter nearly took Frank McAvennie's head off with an elbow

Nah I was thinking Roughies debut he came on wearing the dutch keepers jersey, got a programme from the game after and will dig it out to get the dates, think we lost 3-2

Re: hibs v celtic - both wearing home strips?

It really started with Celtic wearing yellow away tops at Easter Road. They were doing this as far back as 1983. They had away tops on in the January 1985 Benny Brazil 6-3 game and away tops in the 1987 CS gas game. Yet there were still games where they played in hoops like the 4-3 Eddie May game. I'm sure though they played in yellow though in the 4-4 Skol Cup game earlier in the season.

We started wearing the white (P&D Windows) away top at Parkhead around 1987.

Re: hibs v celtic - both wearing home strips?

I seem to recall that Celtic wore a yellow away top during one of the early 70s matches, it was on the TT video however it was a bit of a one off, probably a very foggy day at the ground

Re: hibs v celtic - both wearing home strips?

Did Celtic Not Bring That Black Away Top Just For Hibs???
Because Both Celtics Home And Away Tops Are Green And White.
I Think That Black Away Top Was Just For Hibs.
Good Of Celtic To Do That For Hibs.LoL

No they had it a few seasons ago but have had to keep it because of the recent clashes, bit like Hibs with their yellow one last season

Re: hibs v celtic - both wearing home strips?

The last occasion when both sides wore their home strips was indeed during the 1991-92 season. On Saturday 2 May 1992 we won 2-1 there (Derek Whyte og and Pat McGinlay) and were coasting along two up til a late consolation for them. This result actually meant that hertz finished second, not Celtic.

From the start of the following season Hibs had purple and black away strip which was worn at Celtic Park on Saturday 12 September 1992 when we won 3-2, coming from behind twice. The celebrations when Gareth Evans scored the late winner were fantastic! Indeed that was our last victory there til 30.4.05, i.e. last season.

Since that match both sides have, to my knowledge anyway, always worn their change strip when playing away in this fixture. For some strange reason (possibly someone can enlighten me?) both sides wore their change strip in the 2001 cup final.

Prior to the 1992-93 season either side occasionally wore their change strip, e.g. Celtic did indeed wear yellow during the night time Skol Cup quarter final in the 1985-86 season, but four days later wore hoops as they also did later in the season for the Scottish Cup quarter final. Also, Hibs wore a white top (P&D Windows before they went bust), green shorts and socks during Sh@gger McAvennie's debut on 3.10.87, then back to the normal green, before the same ensemble (this time 6.5.89).

Re: hibs v celtic - both wearing home strips?

HailHail: The game you are referring to was the Scottish Cup 4th Round match played at Parkheed on Sunday 20 February 1988. It was live on BBC Scotland and finished goalless. Hibs did indeed wear the home top with green shorts and socks. The replay on the following Wednesday saw a late Billy Stark header (shown recently on TWTTTW) guide Celtic through. They wore their yellow strip that night. And again on Sat 02.04.88 when a 2-0 Easter Saturday weekend virtually guaranteed them the title.
