The Hibernian manager has been linked with a Boro comeback should current boss Steve McClaren become the next England coach.

Mowbray remains a popular figure with the Boro faithful after spending a decade on Teesside during his playing days.

He has performed a solid job with Hibs, but concedes talk of taking over at The Riverside is fanciful until there is a vacancy.

"If the Middlesbrough job comes my way it will be because there's a vacancy and it's right for me," said Mowbray.

"If Steve McClaren goes and their chairman Steve Gibson thinks Tony Mowbray is the best man for the job then he will probably make the call to my chairman and ask the question.

"Then we will have a decision to make, but, at the moment, we don't have one."

Irrespective of whether Mowbray is a contender to be the next Middlesbrough manager, he acknowledged he does not envisage staying at Hibs in the long term.

He added: "I've been at Hibs two years now and what can you achieve here?

"I'm not going to be here in four years, maybe not even in three years, just trying to finish fourth in the league.

"The stuff that goes with the Scottish game is suffocating. I'm not going to be a career Scottish manager, moving from Hibs to boss Falkirk, Livi or whoever. I'm not going to do it."

He is right imho as 4th is the best that could have been acheived without any money for him to spend.
