I heard it on talk 107. I would like to echo your sentiments but I believe it's the correct time for him to move on.

Think it's the right move not to give him a new contract, but been a good servant over the last 6 years - thanks Gary and good luck

Re: no new contract for gary smith

I would have given him another year. What's the chances of Mowbray, as before, using the money saved in wages to bring in another s**t striker?

For a former defender, his proclivity for signing midfielders and strikers when we are crying out for defenders is, IMHO, the one big black mark on his tenure as Hibs boss.

Re: no new contract for gary smith

Gary has done a sterling job for us and I wish him well in the future.

Now the real challenge lies ahead can we create a stronger squad with the resources available, if so TM could well be a magician as well as a Football Manager.

Pretty sure they did offer him a one year contract? No?

He wanted a 2 year contract which would have kept him at the club till he is 37.

Lets hope TM brings in another defender!

Nope, according to the Evening News he was told by Mowbray that he wouldn't be offered a new contract.

Smith believes he can carry on playing for another two years, but it's pretty clear that Mowbray believes (wrongly IMHO) that Smith is surplus to requirements.

Re: no new contract for gary smith

Worst decision Mowbray's made - Smith's been consistent and model professional for us. Think he could have a big part to play next year, though maybe not every week. So basically, we have to get an entire new defence.... better not include Varga!!!!

Another player to go to Gretna you think?

GS must be on pretty decent wages, for the same money we could no doubt get someone younger who can play almost every game.

Gary has probably been our most consistent player over the last few seasons, I'll miss him.

Re: no new contract for gary smith

I still think it would be worth keeping him around if even to just take a back seat and only be used when needed. Considering the lack of experience we have he could still be useful. But I wouldnt be surprised to see him snapped up by another SPL team. I think we are taking the word rebuilding to a new level next season.

Re: no new contract for gary smith

yeah, what are we looking at? keeppers, almost an entire defense, some REAL strikers if deeks leaves and something that stops our midfielders from constantly being crocked while trying to strip out some of the sub par players we've got. That's a busy off season!

Exactly!

Smith has been fantastic (and I truely mean that) for us the past 2 seasons, calm, confident and a truely professional role-model for younger players.

I know for a fact I will be slated for this but I genuinely do think you can see that he played alongside Frank Sauzee for a good period and that has rubbed off on him, his tendency to not panic and just play the simple ball and get us out of trouble has been a pleasure to watch the past 2 seasons definetely.

A player/coach contract is the least Gary Smith deserves after his consistently brilliant performances under Tony Mowbray.

Good luck Gary, you will be missed.
