Racism reminder

Can I just remind the, admittedly very few, Hibs fans that think it's OK to shout racist abuse at players to...

stop it now!!!!

I had one sitting two seats away from me on Sunday who was at it with Goncalves. That's now more than once I've heard a couple of young guys doing that this season so I think a reminder is in order.

Thoughts please....

It is up to the rest of us to stand up to these idiots. That kind of behaviour tarnishes the good name of Hibernian and is not something we as Hibernian fans should tolerate.

Re: Racism reminder

I heard a group of Hibees singing the Edinburgh song outside Hampden the other week and about 2 mins later a pakistani family walked past with their hibs scarfs on...

Really disgusts me that these " Hibs fans " that sing these songs are allowed to wear anything of hibs material.

Re: Racism reminder

As someone who has worked in education for schools about sectarianism and racism I have strong views on these matters. I am also a Hibs fan it it pains me to see and hear racist/sectarian abuse at games. For information, using racist/sectarian language and behaviour is an arrestable offence, and these offences include citing people's nationality, ie) a Hearts fan was arrested at Parkhead last year for calling Craig Bellamy a "Welsh bastard". In this respect the Refugee Song was totally unacceptable, as it was for many other good reasons too.

Racism brings shame to our great club and it is up to all supporters to ''explain this'' to those uneducated cretins that continue with these songs.

Re: Racism reminder

Maybe the Club should do something about it and lead the way.
Rangers are about to get punished for their supporters' behaviour. Maybe Hibs should take the lead and use some preventative strategy of their own - before kick/ half time announcements about abuse/chants, or a wee film/ video in stands, or more obvious announcements in programmes, and ticket and ST purchases. I also think the young fans look up to managers and players as role models, and it is important that they see that they, as well as Club admin, do not support racism/sectarianism with good media coverage/ shool visits and good community links with supporters clubs/ local community groups.

Great idea. I'm sure much of it has already been implemented already with the "Show racism the red card" campaign etc, but it would do no harm to hammer out the message more regularly.

Re: Racism reminder

Well as a part of my work in fighting sectarianism we wrote to football clubs to ask for signed stuff to show groups that the players themselves did not support these attitudes. Only Celtic sent a signed jersey and letter of support. However, at least Hibs have a Community Officer in the Admin.Structure. Hearts said that they already supported the Show Racism the Red Card campaign and offered to sell us a signed jersey as a donation to their nominated charity. Meanwhile, there is work to be done.

I think the club could do more to try to eradicate the problem,
but to even liken it to the huns

. There is a very small
minority at ER who think its fine to sing 'dodgy' songs whereas
at Ibrox, Celtic park and gorgie it is, at the very least, a large
minority. If not the majority.

Re: Racism reminder

There is no harm in seeing what others are doing and seeing if we can implement similar ideas. The wider public perception of football, and football supporters, are important issues - especially when clubs are trying to attract bigger auediences and the costs of being a regular supporter are high. Noone would want their children to attend matches and learn bad language and attitudes - especially based on colour, religion and nationality. I agree that in comparison to other clubs Hibs appear to have a small problem, but complacency is not the answer for tackling public expressions of racism and sectarianism and ER is not the home of either.

I did say something to the guy, but not in an aggressive way or anything. My days of fighting at the fitba' are long gone.

He was a bit p*ssed (no excuse though) and shook my hand after it. His mate, a Celtic fan, said something to him as well. It worked out OK on this occasion but it depends on the person as to what reaction you'll get.

Well done! I would reckon that 9 times out of 10 that would have been all that was required. A lot of these characters get carried away and a gentle reminder often sorts it out.

How about this then for being completely inappropriate:

Was in a team meeting yesterday when my manager came out with a little turn of phrase " we are all ni**ers on the woodpile".

Bad enough in itself without me being mixed race!

Did Boab Malcolm not offer a signed pic?

Wholehartedly agree with the ideals of this thread. No place for it in society, let alone football.

To be honest it was one of those moments where I was not sure he had actually said it. You know when you think you must be hearing things.

If you're looking for someone ageist, sexist, racist, completely right wing then he's yer man.

Unbelievable eh?

We still get a few of them offshore, mostly ignorant tossers from Deep South USA.

A good few years ago, while working on the Beryl A platform, a black coring engineer came onboard, bearing gifts. He handed a nice storm jacket to the Drilling Supervisor who tried it on and said "Boy, you call your boss and tell him the jacket fits just fine . . . and tell him to git me a white boy out here on tomorrow's chopper!"

It just beggars belief.

One of my friends works for the Wood Group and moved to Houston. I went over for a (free) holiday to stay with him and we drove from Houston to New Orleans for the weekend. We were drivnig through real red neck territory but couldnt stop for something to eat cos the chances are, I would not have been served.

Friend said if I didnt stop admiring my newly manicured nails he was gonna throw me out. Said I'd be tied to the back of a trailer in no time and nails would soon be fecked

Re: Racism reminder

I have just been working on anto racism programme in connection with the KKK. Public reaction from alla ages commented on the fact that racism still exists, as do racist groups. Wider discussions identified that Scotland has its fair share of racist problems. An Executive Survey from 2005 identified a 70% increase in racist crime in the country from 1999, and 30% of folk thought it was acceptable to use terms like paki/chinki- both of which are racist and unacceptable. I trust Hibs, with its pround history of welcoming new communities into Edinburgh, will do something towards fighting racism and sectarianism in the future. On this occassion let fans give the example, and do the club, and its history, proud.
