Re: Racism reminder

I agree. The club, and supporters' clubs, must make efforts to work together to welcome new audiences into ER and become Hibs fans. To do this showing that a day at a Hibs game is a good one which is family friendly, and can go by without racist abuse/ sectarian abuse. I would welcome any efforts made to encourage Polish families, or any others moving to Edinburgh, to visit ER, and for Hibs to invest in facilities to make repeat visits appealing. One idea: as well as improving training facilties, could the club offer Nursery facilties/ a gym for family members who either too young to attend a game, or would prefer to work out. Another key message the club does support is fitness, and health care, and it could extend this wider into the community through the stadium's own facilties. The East Stand Nursery/ Gym?

Agreed. I think hibs does relatively well at attracting families, although there is always room for improvement. I dont think we have a major problem with racist or sectarian abuse, indeed i cant remember the last time i heard any sectarian abuse at easter road, but certainly singin songs about refugees etc. isnt gonna win us any favours with immigrant communities.

However regarding the redevelopment of the East Stand, i dont think this should be done with primarily family hospitality in mind. Hibs must be careful when they redevelop it that they dont risk losing the noise and atmosphere it provides. For example, a one-tier stand instead of a two tier stand would be better in this respect. Far too many stadiums down south have lost any atmosphere after they have been redeveloped as the clubs have been trying too hard to attract new groups of fans and families.

Re: Racism reminder

I take your point about atmosphere, but just wanted to raise the point about the club, and supporters' clubs, taking an initiative to welcome new audiences and families to support Hibs.I agree that we do not appear to have massive sectarian issues at Hibs, but the refugee song embarrassment would not have won us many fans among new communities settling into Edinburgh. Perhaps family facilities elsewhere then - in the corner pockets after the east stand is built? Perhaps some Hibs Community Coaching at local schools, or community groups being invited to Hibs for a tour, and kids to be allowed a free coaching session or two - and this to be done regularly. Nothing worse than token pats on the head. Hibs need to build a sustainable, resourcable strategy to develop its audience, and encourage new communities into the club.

Re: Racism reminder

yes. language as well as behaviour are important tools for combating racism and sectrianism. As well as Polish, Hibs should identify other key community languages and produce leaflets/ news letters in these langauges for the community centres/ leaders to distribute, and offer tours, coaching, etc. Together, these good people will be the next generations of Hibs fans, and the club need to attract them to the stadium, and the club's great history in welcoming newcomers to Edinburgh/Leith.

Re: Racism reminder

if you know how to get threads to the attention of directors then go for it. i have been a Hibs fan all my life and never met any of the directors/admin folk. I have, however, tried to get support from the Community Officer for my work ( giving classes on fighting sectarianism/racism). I appreciate your support for this thread, and like to think that the vast majority of Hibs fans would support both Club initiatives to fight racism/ sectarianism, as well as welcome new Hibs fans. One further idea: the prospect of the Hibs Museum could involve community work/ handling kits for community groups to borrow to learn about the history of the club, and its role in Leith/Cowgate/Edinburgh history

What I was suggesting is that you, as you're obviously experienced in working with the community along these lines, put your ideas in an e mail to Colin McNeill whom, I'm sure, would at the very least acknowledge you and possibly let you know what work is already being done in the community.

You have some very sound ideas there and deserve to have them aired at the Club.

Re: Racism reminder

How can we expect the young hibs fans to stop chanting there racist/sectarian comments when we have a highly rated player with they young fans singing them himself? surely they young fans take young players as role models!!

Re: Racism reminder

I totally agree with you. The fact is that youngsters look to players as role models and heroes. It would help so much if the manager/ players came out on a media campaign, like show racism the red card, and put their names to fighting racism/ sectarianism.
Celtic and Rangers have been approached but neither manager fancies it. I would be hugely proud if Hibs led the way in this matter. If TM, and players, appeared on TV/Radio/ Posters and Newspapers in a public statement standing against these things, and Community Coaching/ ER facilities were developed to develop a new generation of decent football fans who support Hibernian.
