could someone clarify this situation for me in respect of how this affects Hibs...i cant be bothered reading the article

so far I'm getting that if we come 4th then we wont get Europe, but in terms of the SC where does this leave us??

do we have to win it to get into Europe or is just being in the final enough to get us into Europe?

i think we have to win it (if we get there) to get into europe as gretna or dundee will be in the final, otherwise 3rd in the league is required

What it means is that the cup runners up will get a UEFA place rather than the 4th placed league team, should the cup winner already have a European place. If the rule change had gone ahead, no cup runner up would have been eligible for a European place.

Rule change is needed, 4th place is a better sustained achievement than beating a few diddy teams and fluking your way to a cup final.

To put it simply.
If we beat hearts in the Semi then the winner of the cup gets into europe.
If not.. Then the winner of Gretna/Dundee goes into europe!

Not quite - this all gets a bit confusing because the teams allocated the two UEFA places must contain a League representative and a national cuup representative
All depends on where the gunts end up - 2nd or 3rd.
Scenarios
If Hibs , Dundee or Gretna win the cup they qualify for UEFA ( as cup representatives) - obviously , and 3rd place team qualify for UEFA as League representaives
If Gunts win the cup and they finish 2nd in the League therefore qualifying for CL - Dundee or Gretna qualify for UEFA ( as cup representatives) ,and 3rd place team qualify for UEFA as League representaives
If Gunts win the cup and they finish 3rd in the League - Gunts qualify for UEFA ( as cup representatives) and 4th place team qualify for UEFA as League representatives
So we need to :
Win the cup or finish 3rd to guarantee UEFA.
The only other way into UEFA is If we finish 4th , the Gunts come 3rd and win the Cup (personally I would sacrifice UEFA under these circumstances to watch Dundee / Gretna beat Hearts in the final - but I'm bitter !)

how do they go about drawing the intertoto, without knowing which clubs will be participating?

The draw is made close to, or after, the end of our season so they should know who's qualified. If not, they(Uefa) enter the teams as "Scots 1" and "Scots 2", depending on where they finish in the league.

The Intertoto has been revamped for next season and is more appealling to clubs cos there's less rounds and more teams get into the Uefa Cup from it.
