What the true valuation of Garry O'Connor?

Anyon who thinks selling Garry O'Connor for the paltry sum of £1.6 million needs their heids looked at.

This BBC report below from 2002 - over three and a half years ago - had Garry rated at £2m as a nineteen year old.

He's worth a hellluva lot more since Tony Mowbray polished him up. £2.5-3m minnimum would be a realistic valuation of the best Scottish striker around.

I feel we've been robbed, mugged, and sold right down the river by an ambitionless Board, grabbing at anythign that was on offer, at a crucial point in the season.

1. Did anyone actually offer £2m?

2. Paper talk.

3. Look at the list of teams - Rangers, competing with three Premiership teams.

4. The (Scottish) transfer market was in a far healthier state then. Hibs themselves had spent significant transfer fees in the year or two prior; they sold de la Cruz and Laursen for fees in that range later in the summer.

1. He's arguably not the best Scottish striker at Hibs.

2. You're forgetting that O'Connor regressed terribly for two seasons under Williamson after making an initial impact which got everyone (over) excited. A lot of people would have been happy to get rid of O'Connor for next to nothing in early 2004 (ie before Mowbray).

1. If they are like that, why did they refuse the offers from Rangers for Riordan?

2. How do they explain to O'Connor - sorry Garry, we know this team could pay you five times (or more) what we can afford, but you're not going anywhere for 2.5 years?

Re: What the true valuation of Garry O'Connor?

The board could have said to the russians you're no getting O'connor till the end of the season and thats that. He's under contract.

Nobody would have grudged Garry leaving at the end of the seasonn for a big payday if the price was right and we got a replacement. But the timing and price is all wrong.

Jumping at £1.6m mid-season with the Cup only two matches away from being at Easter Road.... and still fighting for a Champions League/EUFA Cup spot...

I'll bet come the end of the season especially, if Garry keeps playing the way he is, his true value would be way above that since he's still got two years on his contract.

Total short-sightedness.

Dont agree sorry, how many more up and coming players will walk away from Easter Road without a penny back into the club, this is very good money for an ok player, i dont want him to go but he is by no means the best striker at the club, fletcher will be immense for us, Killen is a similar player who can hold play better by the looks of it, remember Scott Brown and Ivan Sproule are strikers as well as midfielders.

Total shortsightedness is not tieing up 5 year deals for players to then command very decent money when there is interest, and i dont need to name names

His value is what someone will pay for him. No other way to establish his value. If no one will pay 2 million for him, then he is worth less.

IMO if Gary O'Connor is a £1.6 Million Player then Derek Riordan under contract is a £3.2 Million player.

FWIW i reckon it's good money and too good to turn down.
