HIBERNIAN manager Tony Mowbray said yesterday the money will be there for him to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window. He added, however, that there would be no lavish signings, and that anyone who came to the club would have to be able to blend in.

"We've had discussions and there are funds available," Mowbray said. "Not huge funds, but hopefully room for additions. I don't want to add players for the sake of it. They've got to be able to fit into our culture."

Mowbray is of the opinion that January is a less auspicious time than the summer in which to buy players, because purchasing clubs usually have to shell out hard cash to wrest them away from the contracts they have with their current employers. He knows that big deals are beyond him, but will be able to move should the right targets be attainable at the right price.

The potential absence of several first-team regulars for the home match with Rangers on Sunday is certainly a sign that the Hibs squad needs to be strengthened. David Murphy, Gary Caldwell and Michael Stewart sat out training all week, while Kevin Thomson only returned yesterday. Defender Gary Smith is another doubt for the match, in which Hibs will be seeking a quick return to winning ways after they were beaten at home to Falkirk last week.
