Footballing Legend: George Best is in intensive care at Cromwell hospital


Former soccer star George Best is in intensive care, doctors have said.

The 59-year-old is being treated at the private Cromwell Hospital in west London.

A hospital spokesman confirmed Best had been admitted to the intensive care unit, but said no further details were available at present.

Best's colourful lifestyle off the pitch has threatened to eclipse the memory of his sporting achievements.

Describing his own lifestyle, the ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland footballer once said: "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered."

In recent years, he caused controversy when he embarked on a drinking binge less than a year after a liver transplant. He had been told one more drink could kill him when he underwent the life-saving surgery in July 2002 and was criticised by a liver specialist for putting people off organ donation.

Transplant expert Derek Manas said: "Sadly, George Best has not proved himself to be a very good role model and his very hig profile drinking has made people lose faith in transplantation."

The star has always been linked to beautiful women, including former Miss World Mary Stavin, and he has a son, Calum, from his first marriage to Angela. More recently, his marriage to Alex, whom he wed in 1995, publicly hit the rocks as his drinking resurfaced.

Rumours about his infidelities were rife while Alex appeared in the TV reality show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! During the show, she confided to glamour model Jordan, along with millions of viewers, that she planned to divorce him. They were granted a "quickie divorce" last year on the grounds of his admitted adultery.

In February last year, Best was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £1,500 after admitting in court to driving almost two and a half times over the legal limit.

I wish him well. Contoversial off the pitch he may be but I thought the guy was one of the greatest players to have kicked a ball, and an ex-Hibby too. Good luck George.
