Hibs receive Rovers assurance

Scottish Premier League side Hibernian have been assured that Wednesday evening’s friendly against troubled eircom League outfit Shamrock Rovers will go ahead as planned at Bohemians’ Dalymount Park ground in Phibsboro.

Hibs are in the middle of a tour of Ireland, going down on penalties to Cork City on Sunday and taking on St Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park(Tuesday).

They will complete the series of pre-season friendlies against Rovers tonight Wednesday night, and Hibs officials have been informed that the game will go ahead as planned despite the Hoops’ financial problems.

Rovers manager Roddy Collins, told he must halve the club’s €23,000-per-week wage bill, placed his entire squad on the transfer list when the July transfer window opened on Friday last.

The club, without a home of its own due to ongoing delays in the completion of a proposed stadium in Tallaght, is currently more than €2m in debt and in desperate need of a new investor following the withdrawal of a UK-based consortium last week.
