Great Words From the Wise One

TONY MOWBRAY has told his kids to stay at Hibs and dine out at football's top table - or risk a lonely career of takeaway food. The vultures are circling above Easter Road but Mowbray revealed he has yet to receive a single offer for any of his young stars.

Skipper Ian Murray will examine his options in January, Craig Rocastle wants to make his loan deal from Chelsea permanent and early talks have started on a new contract for Garry O'Connor.

Other talented kids such as Derek Riordan and Steven Whittaker are also catching the eye but Mowbray has told them to delay their departures as long as possible.

He was asked, devil's-advocate style, why a player should stay at Hibs on £100 a week if a bigger club comes in and offers them three times as much.

He said: 'You can go to that club offering £300 a week and quickly think to yourself: 'What am I doing here?' 'The facilities are useless, I don't get on with the rest of the lads, the manager doesn't know what he's doing, the training's crap and I don't like where I'm living.

'I played for a fluent, passing team where training sessions were fantastic and now I'm scrapping for headers and fighting for second balls.

'I wish I could go back to Hibs but for the sake of£200 it's all gone.

'In my first five years at Middlesbrough I was slagged in the streets by fans when things weren't going so well.

'Then we got a manager who knew what he was doing and suddenly they were shaking my hands in the supermarket and thinking I was a god.

'It's up to the players. They can go out on a Saturday night after a good result and enjoy a nice meal in a lovely restaurant, or they can stay at home with a curry because they've been beaten 4-0.

'I'm trying to build a team and the guys here should enjoy the camaraderie of coming through together.

'I tell them if they're good enough the money will come their way - don't chase it.'
