Scotland Under-21s crashed to a 3-1 defeat to their Spain counterparts after a tempestuous encounter in Alcoi. The match belied its friendly status with tempers frayed from the outset and Scotland played the second half with ten men. Spain were on top for much of the game, with Scotland goalkeeper Graeme Smith saving well from Sergio Garcia and Angulo hitting the post. But on 43 minutes, the visitors took the lead when Garry O'Connor headed home a free kick from Scott Morrison. On the stroke of half time, though, the Scots were reduced to ten men when David Clarkson was dismissed for a second bookable offence. After the interval, Spain forged on and levelled the contest on 55 minutes when Andres Iniesta curled in a free kick. Midway through the second period, the hosts were ahead when Santi Cazorla drilled home a shot from the edge of the penalty area. With both sets of players seemingly on a short fuse, matters were not calmed on 72 minutes when Spain earned a disputed penalty. Jonathan fell under a challenge from Steven Whittaker, with the Scots incensed when a spot kick was awarded. Once the fuss died down, Juan Melli made it 3-1 to Spain. Sergio Garcia also had a goal disallowed for offside, but the senior Scotland side will be anxious for Friday's friendly against Spain in Valencia to carry less fireworks than the Under-21s' meeting.
