Re: Groningen Bounce Tours

Picked up all the tees and stuff for the gifts today, Tour Tees should be ready on Friday, I will bring them with me, people can square me up there?

Handy hint and top tip # 1, the Ibis Hotel in the Dam doesn't supply shampoo and stuff in the rooms I hear, so mind and chorey plenty from the Hotel in Groningen.

Re: Groningen Bounce Tours

Can I add Rick has managed to get the club shop to stay open until after our tour. So those that fancy picking up a Groningen Fishy Souvenir, can do so. I found these are handy for keeping the sun off my balding pate.

Re: Groningen Bounce Tours

Here's a quick translation of what's in the newspaper clipping:

Photo caption:

IN DEPTH - THE MAGIC OF GREEN AND WHITE

"Brotherly love between FC Groningen and Hibernian"
By Mick van Wely

GRONINGEN
What do the Scottish football club Hibernian FC and FC Groningen have in common? Apart from faithful fans, they share the same club colours and are familiar with the phenomenon of having a stadium in a working-class neighbourhood. Thanks to the love between a Scot and a girl from Groningen there has been a connection made between the two clubs.

It's a sultry summer day under the Spanish sun in 1986. On his holidays, the Scotsman Mike Weddell (now 44) meets his future wife Rika (now 41) from Ulrum. After keeping in close touch by telephone and mail, Mike comes to visit his darling in Holland. In Groningen, he meets and befriends Jeroen Vrijma. Through him, Mike comes in contact with what will become his second great love: the football club FC Groningen.

"I immediately noticed the great resemblance with my club from Edinburgh, Hibernian FC. Not just the area, colours and history, but mainly how much the two sets of fans were alike in their passion and dedication to the clubs."

Rika moves to Edinburgh but gets homesick in the Scottish capital city. She misses the area she comes from, Ommelanden, and her friends and family. In 1994, the couple decide to move to Groningen. Since then, Weddel hasn't missed a Groningen match. "I have a lot of friends amongst the supporters here. But I also know the players quite well. Ex-Groningen player Glen Salmon's wife is Scottish, she comes from the same city as me. (He doesn’t mention that Glens wife is a jambo by the way).

In 1997, Weddel - better known in the town as Scottish Mike - decides to give his Groningen mates a taste of the Scottish football atmosphere. They go to watch a game of Hibernian FC together. From that moment on, there have been exchange visits almost every year. Last year, 25 Groningen fans flew to the Scottish capital.

Scottish Mike, a service engineer, hardly knows which team to support anymore after all these years in Holland. "I have always said, you can only really support ONE club fanatically. But I just can't choose between Groningen and Hibernian."

The Scots are coming to town on Sunday, 18th February. It will be a really cracking event too, with Groningen hosting AZ Alkmaar. The Scots will get a tour of the Euroborg before the game and afterwards will tuck in to a big meal a the Wok restaurant in the Euroborg: hopefully there will be a nice dessert after the main event, an exciting football match.

SIMILARITIES
* Both teams wear green and white
* Both teams emerged in a working-class neighbourhood
* Both teams recently got into European competitions
* FC Groningen and Hibernian both have an annoying rival club with a lot of money
* FC Groningen and Hibernian both regained top flight promotion from the first division in 2000

Re: Groningen Bounce Tours

Is Farmer still the owner of Hibernian FC. I mentioned that as well as a similarity. As you might know: FC Groningen is called Farmers or Boeren.

The picture of Mike, Jeroen and Marcel was taken at the former gate of Stadion Oosterpark. Oosterpark was our ground till januari 2006. It was a trainingfacility till november 2006. Now most of it has gone as you can see on this link:

Yes, and even a big one named Holland Casino is close to your hotel (appr 100 yrd)
A second casino is in the stadium Euroborg, but is much smaller.
