Default Re: FC Groningen 2006-2007

Forecast for this season: Battling for fifth place in the league with Hoerenveen

Why: Only one player left and we got some excellent new signings

New signings
Brian van Loo, 31, The Netherlands, Goalkeeper, came from Heracles Almelo. Back up goalie.
Ondre Svejdik, 24, Czech Republic, Central defender, came from Mlada Boleslav (runner up in last seasons Chech premier league)
Danny Holla, 18, The Netherlands, Defensive midfielder, came from youth team
Goran Lovre, 24, Serbia, Offensive midfielder, came from Anderlecht. Has played in Serbia’s u21 and in the champions league
Luis Suarez, 19, Uruguay, Striker, came from Nacional de Montevideo. Plays for Uruguay u21. Biggest signing in the history of our club. Caught the eye of big clubs like Barcelona and AC Milan. Made an excellent debut by scoring three times within 15 minutes in a friendly against first division club Telstar.
Njazi Kuqi, 23, Finland, Striker, came from Birmingham City. Has unfortunately been sent away after a number of incidents at training.

Gone
Gijs Luirink, Central defender to AZ

Rumours
Erik Nevland to replace Dirk Kuijt (who went to Liverpool) at Feyenoord. If this happens it will be a big blow for us as he is our top striker.

Key players
Gibril Sankoh. Strong central defender with an excellent pass. Won’t surprise me if he plays for AC Milan someday. Rasmus Lingren. Vacuumcleaner on the midfield. Yevgeni Levchenko. The big director. Erik Nevland. Our own Batistuta. And hopefully Luis Suarez in the near future.

Next up
Feyenoord. We’re gonna take ‘em to the cleaners.

Possible line up
Roorda; Matthijs, Sankoh, Kruijswijk, van der Linden; Buijs, Lindgren, Levchenko, van der Laak; Salmon and Nevland.
Bench: van Loo, Fledderus, Cornelisse, Suarez, Floren, Holla, Svejdik
Injured: Silva (damn)

And so fecking easy :YAYYY: . We just played with them. It could have been 5 really. And these guys are one of the title kandidates, at least that's what they think themselves.

Allright they had Kuijt and Kalou both gone and Hofs suspended but they still have a budget that's about four times our budget. Trouble is they've spent it all on overated mediocre players.

Outstanding players today: Danny Buijs, who is actually a former Feyenoord player and fan, and was all over the Feyenoord defenders yesterday, Gibril Sankoh the Rock in our defense and Rasmus Lindgren.

I personally think Nevland will stay. We know Feyenoords gaffer, local Groningen hero Erwin Koeman, wants him but they also have this chairman, Jorien van den Herik. He 's as dumb as his fans. and Feyenoord have the dumbest fans in the country. I think if Feyenoord was a Scottish club they would definitely be from Glasgow. Anyway Jorien wants to please his fans. They want a big name from a foreign competition so he'll make sure they'll get a big name from a foreign competition. Doesn't matter if the guy plays well (or even play at all) at the moment it has to be a big name.

I think he's ours for four years. I expect a lot from him and can't wait till he's in the starting line up. And the moment he's not ready for that. Yesterday he only played for about three minutes but a tremendous roar came from the crowd as he entered the ground.

UEFA-Cup, on the 14th of september we play against Partizan Belgrad in Serbia.
This wil be difficult but we go to see FC Groningen win!!!
we only get 1400 tickets for our away game, I think this will be a big problem.
It was no problem we couldn't find enough planes to fly us over there and many of us didn't want to sit on a bus for three days.
Here you can find some pictures from our game against Feyenoord:

FC Groningen – Heracles Almelo 2-1 (0-1) 10/09/06

The second home game of the 2006/2007 season saw Groningen take on the other surprise package of last season: Heracles Almelo. They are one of only two teams ever to walk away from the Euroborg stadium with anything more than a defeat in Dutch league matches. As they had already beaten Groningen at home last season manager Ron Jans made it an explicit point in his goals for this season to do better against Hercales.

Bruno Silva returned for Groningen at right back for Matthijs who got injured in training, and Goran Lovre replaced Danny Buijs who was sold to Feyenoord hours before the transfer deadline. Heracles was without Hirayama, last season’s top goal scorer with eight goals, who had been home sick and was allowed to leave for a japanese club last week. His replacement was Brazilian Everton, who despite having only been at the club for a short time is already highly regarded by manager Brood. German midfielder Michalke is out for about six months with a knee injury, and thus didn’t play today, whilst striker Hofstede was also out.

It looked like Arnold Kruiswijk hadn’t been paying much attention to this mangers wishes to do better against Heracles this season, as just after kick-off he tried to pack-pass to keeper Roorda, who hadn’t anticipated his defender’s move, and put the ball in his own net after just nine seconds of play! This is a new Dutch record for fastest own goal and only one second short of equalling the Dutch record for fastest goal ever.
This disastrous start surely really rattled Groningen’s confidence, as nothing seemed to go right in the first half. It took nearly 20 minutes for Groningen’s first attempt on goal, a weak shot by Glen Salmon, one of the few players who reached an acceptable level in that first half. In that first 20 minutes Heracles’s Brazilian striker Everton even had an opportunity to make it 2-0, but saw his shot saved by Roorda.

After failing to make it 2-0 Heracles decided it would try to hold on the 1-0 advantage and resorted throughout the rest of the match to defensive football laced with delaying tactics. This at least gave Groningen the majority of possession, and some small chances were created. Heracles conceded a few corners and Groningen’s aerial threat became apparent when Van Der Laak failed to connect to a good cross by Silva, and Salmon just headed wide from a Sankoh cross. But in all way too little for 45 minutes of football from a team that is in Europe vs. a team that is expected to be fighting against relegation this season.

After the break the disappointing Lovre did not return. His place was taken by Levchenko who took up position on the left side of midfield. Fledderus moved from the position now taken by Levchenko to the vacant slot in central midfield. This looked to give Groningen more control over game, but despite that it was almost Everton again who nearly scored the 2-0 for Heracles after just 60 seconds into the 2nd half. Roorda however stood his ground and parried the shot. Groningen was clearly looking for the equaliser, and saw Silva putting a free-kick inches wide of the post in the 12th minute after the break. A few minutes later Heracles was not so lucky when left back Van Der Linden headed on a ball just inside the penalty area on the left side of the pitch. He was clattered by a Heracles defender, but the ball fell to Van De Laak who produced a low shot with his left foot that, although being touched by the Heracles goalkeeper, crept just in at the far corner.
This equaliser gave Groningen the inspiration it was looking for all afternoon, and was soon pressing for the winning goal. This fell earlier than expected when Rasmus Lindgren put a high ball into the box. Nevland tried to control it but was pulled to the ground by the arm, the culprit being experienced Heracles midfield man Maas. The referee, who had been having a rather poor game up to that point, gave one of his few good decisions of the day by awarding Groningen a penalty. Levchenko, who looks to be the Groningen penalty kick specialist now, made no mistake and converted the spot-kick beautifully: 2-1!
Poor Heracles had no reply and had to allow Groningen to look for more goals. This nearly materialised when Cornelisse, who replaced goalscorer Van De Laak, missed two shooting opportunities in the last minutes of the 2nd half. Silva meanwhile had been replaced by Florén in the 72nd minute. Silva is just back after injury and 90 minutes is still a bit much for the Uruguayan. Fledderus and Nevland looked spent too, but manger Jans had used his three substitutes.
In the added time Heracles managed to get a corner and a free-kick. Keeper Pieckenhagen went up for these, but both were wasted.

And thus ended a poor game with few highlights and footballing intelligence. It was won on pure grit and determination (and luck) on Groningen’s side. It leaves Groningen 3rd in the Eredivisie with 7 from 3, a very pleasant position. It could be argued that it is not a bad result in a ‘European week’ against a determined opponent to whom last season 4 points were lost. If however Groningen wants to come away from Belgrade with a result on Thursday, they will have to play a lot better than this.
Next weekend: Sparta Rotterdam away.

Partizan Belgrade – FC Groningen 4-2 (3-0)

Groningen started its first European match in 14 years without experienced Paul Matthijs, who is still unavailable through injury. Just as against Hercales Bruno Silva played at right back, Levchenko played from the start replacing Goran Lovre who had disappointed the previous match. This must have been a major disappointment for Lovre, who was denied the opportunity to shine at the home ground of the club where he played as a youngster. It is safe to say that Groningen played their strongest formation possible.
But despite this, just as against Heracles, Groningen’s started the match disastrous; after three minutes Lazic felt the faintest of touches by Sankoh and dived in the box like he was shot. Latvian referee Lajuks awarded this fine piece of theatrical play-acting with a penalty kick, duly converted by Marinkovic. Whatever game plan Groningen took to Belgrade, it had to be scuppered after this horror start.
After just 16 minutes of play Eric Nevland lost possession leaving Partizan midfielder Zajic free to steam forward and produce a low shot for just outside the penalty area to which Bas Roorda had no reply, 2-0 to Partizan. Groningen’s first (!) reply came after 28 minutes when Nevland put a low ball into the box for Glen Salmon. Partizan ‘keeper Kralj just beat Salmon to it, sending the ball behind and leaving poor Salmon in a heap in the goal. This collision looked to have injured ‘the man of glass’, as on 30 minutes Salmon limped off with a hamstring problem, to be replaced by winger Cornelisse. The game was going from bad to worse for the heroes on green and white.
In the last 15 minutes of the 1st half Groningen seemed to take a bit more control over the match but one has to ask the question if this could be contributed to a slightly improved Groningen performance, or Partizan taking the foot off the accelerator a bit. It did not however bring any goal chances for Groningen, to the contrary, the last chances before half time fell to Partizan. First a Marinkovic cross was missed by all his fellow players with the ball whizzing through the penalty area harmlessly, to the relief of all that was Groningen. A 2-0 halftime score looked to be the result of the first half. Marinkovic however though otherwise and unleashed a shot that although touched by Roorda found the back of the net for a horrific 3-0 score at half time. An early exit out of Europe not only looked likely, but a truly humiliating score was looming large above Groningen’s heads with half the match still to be played.

The second half started with two unchanged teams. Nothing much happened in the first 10 to 15 minutes except for a booking for Rnic who fouled Fledderus. It was the same Fledderus on 58 minutes who put a glimmer of hope back into Groningen hearts when he volleyed in a clever Nevland pull back via the underside of the bar. Groningen looked a bit more purposeful in that second half, but what hadn’t changed were the erratic decisions of the referee and his assistants who ruled time after time again promising Groningen attacks offside, some of which very dubiously. Partizan on the other hand didn’t relax in that second half and was looking for goals too. It was Roorda who denied Marinkovic his hattrick when he tipped his shot over after a header back by Sankoh that was just too short, highlighting Sankoh’s generally poor game.
Kruiswijk had to be replaced by Svedik after 63 minutes with an ankle problem. On 72 minutes Roorda again had to put a ball behind for a corner after a well taken free-kick by Djordjevic. After that Partizan corner kick Van De Laak was replaced by Suarez although at that moment unknown to Groningen manager Jans, Nevland was struggling with a muscle problem and should have been replaced.
The 500 strong Groningen contingent in the ground was hoping to keep this score as it was, and thus keep hopes alive of reaching the Uefa Cup group phase. But just as in the 1st half Partizan struck again in the final moments of the half. A Partizan goal-kick was not dealt with properly by the Groningen defence leaving Zajic to fire in the 4-1, all but burying Groningen’s dreams to go through. This time however the last word of the match was left to Groningen. An injury time long ball by Roorda was headed on by Nevland to Suarez who squeezed through two Partizan defenders to lob the ball over Kralj for the 4-2 end result.
The result leaves Groningen with a theoretical 32% chance to progress to the next round, as according to Uefa statistics teams losing 4-2 away have a 32% chance to make this up in the home leg. Add to this the aura of invincibility of Groningen at the Euroborg and the fanatical home support, the group phase still looks a possibility for Groningen. But the performance needs to be a lot better, as well as coping with bad referees and cheating opponents. We’ll know in a fortnight.

Line up FC Groningen
1C Roorda; 2 Silva, 3 Sankoh, 4 Kruiswijk (63’ 12 Svejdik), 17 Van der Linden; 21 Lindgren, 13 Van de Laak (73’ 20 Suarez), 8 Levchenko, 22 Fledderus; 9 Salmon (31’ 11 Cornelisse), 10 Nevland.

Sparta Rotterdam – FC Groningen 0-1 (0-0)

Sparta Rotterdam’s ground, Het Kasteel, (‘The Castle’) is not an easy place to go, especially not after a Uefa Cup match in the Balkans in midweek. On top of that the game against Partizan had left some players nursing injuries. Eric Nevland, Glen Salmon, Arnold Kruiswijk who all started in the midweek match were, had to sit out this game. Left-back Van Der Linden, who started his career at today’s opponents, pulled out of the quad on Sunday morning due to flu. Their replacements were: Luis Suarez, Yuri Cornelisse, Ondrej Svejdik, and Mathias Florén. Paul Matthijs has been out longer through injury, and was today still unavailable. Sparta fielded an unchanged team from the one that lost at home to Feyenoord last week.
The game started with Groningen taking it easy, trying to keep the pace of the game down, understandable considering the effort given on Thursday. Sparta looked more willing to go forward but was clearly lacking in confidence because of their poor start to the season with one point from three. Sparta manager Vloet had put pressure on his side by claiming that a win today would be vital for the clubs chances in the remainder of the season.
Groningen’s ‘early conceding hoodoo’ seemed to materialise for the third game in a row when ex-Groningen player Van Dijk tapped in a ball at the far post after a confusing situation in the box. He was rightly ruled offside by the referee to the relief of all that was Groningen. The rest of the half saw few chances for either side. Rose fired wide for Sparta after about 15 minutes. The best opportunity of the 1st half fell to Groningen on 28 minutes. After a cross from the right Fledderus headed the ball towards the far post with Sparta ‘keeper Ponk making a vital save. The rebound also fell to Fledderus whose shot hit the bar from close range. This was the first real chance for Groningen in the match, underlining Groningen’s lacklustre approach to the game.
The remainder of the first half saw little good football nor chances for either side. Sparta defender Schenkel did however escape from a second booking, and thus dismissal, after hacking down Fledderus who was cutting through the Sparta defence. He was lucky to be allowed to stay on the pitch, and had poorly leading referee Van Sichem to thank.

In the second half Van De Laak didn’t return for Groningen. He too was added to the lengthy injury list and replaced by Stefano Seedorf. For Sparta Schenkel and Rose were replaced by Iderlindo and Oost. The first good chance of the 2nd half was set up by Seedorf. His pass to Cornelisse was followed by a lovely through ball to Suarez, who unleashed a shot from the left side of the box that whizzed in in front on the goal wide of the far post. This did not mean however that Groningen controled the game in that second half. Sparta still dominated possesion and carved out some chances. Medunjanin put a shot wide and Roorda had to stretch to deny Anastasiou a goal from a header at the far post. But just as in the first half Groningen the best chances fell to Groningen. One of those chances was a header for Suarez that hit the post, from a Fledderus corner-kick.
Groningen made its second substitution of the game when Goran Lovre came on the pitch to replace Fledderus in midfield. Sparta also made a substitution when young striker Emnes replaced his older colleague Anastasiou, had had been disappointing all afternoon. After a foul by Lovre Sparta was awarded a free kick in a very promising position right in front of goal, bang on the 18 yard line. Van Dijk, who had claimed the free kick despite a known specialist like Polak on the pitch, blasted the ball miles high over the bar. Ridicule from the home crowd was his reward.
In the last 15 minutes Groningen players seemed to realise that with their minimum effort they had managed to hold Sparta to a 0-0 score, and that perhaps with a bit more effort they could snatch all three points. Another excellent through ball from midfield was chased by Suarez, who played the ball past the Sparta ‘keeper Ponk, only to have his legs taken away by the big Sparta goaly. Despite the obvious nature of the foul Van Sichem, who was clearly just as eager to help the home side as the Latvian referee on Thursday against Partizan, did not reward a penalty. The continued Groningen pressure resulted in two more corner kicks that didn’t bother Sparta that much.
Sparta also had chances in the lively last 15 minutes of the game. Substitute Oost, Sparta’s top goal scorer last season with eight, had a promising shot stopped by Silva. The chances came thick and fast in the last 10 minutes. The next one fell to the away side again when a clever ball by Seedorf was squared into the box by Lovre intended for the unmarked Suarez. The ball hit the only Sparta player in the box, Olfers, and was nearly deflected into his own net by the player.
In the 88th minute Levchenko tried to reach Suarez with a high ball. Suarez tried to lob the goalkeeper, just like he did on Thursday, but only managed to get the ball up high in the air. The tenacious Uruguayan did not give up and beat the jumping Ponk to the ball, a feat in itself, and headed a cheeky little ball across goal. And there was Seedorf……totally unmarked to head the ball in the empty goal from barely a yard out, 1-0 to Groningen!
In the remainder of the match Sparta tried to force an equaliser, but failed to create anything. And thus the first away victory of the season was added to the books.
Was the win deserved? Sparta had dominated possession, but hardly created any chances. The best chances fell to Groningen and on that basis it was deserved. A minimum effort/maximum result game is very welcome in a ‘European week’, and hopefully it was due to the physically demanding midweek match that we haven’t seen the good football displayed by Groningen last season yet. But better performances are needed if Groningen wants to progress in Europe and hold on to its current league position of second (on goal difference from number one, AZ Alkmaar, with equal points).
Wednesday awaits First Division TOP Oss in the Dutch Cup.

FC Groningen – Partizan Belgrade 1 - 0 (0 - 0)

Thursday night the 28th of September saw the return of European Cup football to Groningen for the first time in 14 years. Would FC Groningen be able to repeat the European successes of the past when the likes of Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid were sent home licking their wounds after a run in with FC Groningen before that (in)famously barmy ‘Green White Army’?
The home side welcomed back Koen van de Laak, who replaced Stefano Seedorf at the right side of midfield. Glen Salmon wasn’t ready yet to make a start, but was included in the squad. Groningen hitman Eric Nevland had recovered enough form a stomach muscle injury, aggravated during Sundays draw with RKC Waalwijk, to start up front with Suarez.
The away side could call again on Branimir Bajic who had been suspended during the first leg of this clash, he replaced Cirkovic in defence. Two players that had been highly impressive during the game in Belgrade, Marinkovic and Mirosavljevic, were replaced by Nadj and Boya. This showed Partizan’s intentions not to be the attacking side in this match, but to take a defensive approach.
The first ten minutes of the match were rather dull and boring with Partizan showing no intentions to attack and Groningen a bit hesitant to commit to many people to the attack, afraid for a Partizan counterattack. After that first period of the game Groningen players realised that this stalemate wouldn’t get them the two goals they needed to progress to the group stages of the UEFA Cup. Eric Nevland, like so many times before, was the first one to try and test Partizan ‘keeper Kralj with a shot from distance. In the 16th minute Levchenko was booked for a harmless collision between his hand and a Partizan player’s face, the Serv succeeding in trying to make it look worse than it actually was. Minutes later it was again Nevland involved in a Groningen attack when he got the ball to Kruiswijk. His high ball in the box was headed towards goal at point blank range by Van der Laak. Kralj saved the shot but that was more due to sheer luck than skill from the ex-PSV Eindhoven goaly.
After 30 minutes in the game it started raining and the game became a bit more unfriendly on both sides. Van der Linden fouled Lazic who broke on the left side of the field and was presented with a yellow card for that. Partizan’s Zajic too was booked for not keeping enough distance at a Groningen free-kick. The rest of the 1st half saw no more real chances and thus the score ate half time was scoreless.

In the second half Goran Lovre replaced the disappointing Levchenko for Groningen. Groningen tried to up the pressure, but it was to Partizan that the first opportunities of the 2nd half fell. Lomic put his diagonal shot just inches wide of the post, after a good pass from Odita. The second chance was for Odita himself who tried to lob Roorda, but the ball landed on top of the goal.
The best chances however were for the home side. A great header by Nevland - who was clearly hindered by his muscle injury – from a Lindgren free-kick almost beat Kralj. And Groningen kept the foot on the gas. This paid of in the 59th minute when Suarez was brought down in the box after a great cross from Van der Linden. A penalty kick was awarded by the Romanian referee, duly converted by Van de Laak. 1-0 to Groningen!!
Suarez was replaced by Glen Salmon, much to the chagrin of the Uruguayan. With Salmon Groningen decided to start looking for the 2-0, a score which would see the Northerners through. Groningen was taking a more opportunistic approach to the game in the last 30 minutes, even more than ever spurred on by the roars from the 20.000 green and white clad ‘Farmers’ who were going mental.
After a vintage Sankoh long ball from the back to Nevland the Norwegian missed another good opportunity to score the deciding goal on 69 minutes. Van de Laak, just back from injury, was spent after 77 minutes and was replaced by Cornelisse. Just two minutes later it was Nevland again who set up Fledderus with a clever through ball. Fledderus raced into the box and was fouled by a Partizan defender. Another penalty! Cornelisse –who is first man to take spot-kicks- stepped up……and saw his somewhat weak shot saved! What a glorious opportunity for 2-0 wasted.
Lesser teams would have been mentally broken by missing a penalty, but not Groningen. The heroes in green and white kept piling forward putting pressure on the Partizan defence. Nevland put a shot just over the bar followed by a great chance for Lovre. His header from a Fledderus cross was no more than an inch wide of the post. Groningen’s relentless attacking gave space to a last shooting opportunity for Partizan’s Zajic, but he missed. And thus ended a great match which saw Groningen come so close to the UEFA Cup group phase.
Well see each other again in Europe next season! The next step for that will be a win for Groningen this Sunday when Vitesse Arnhem visits the Euroborg. We are 4th in the Dutch Eredivisie and we have no time to mourn this early exit from Europe. We have to consolidate a high league position so we can look forward to another round of European football next season.
