But I went to see a French movie called Hidden (Cache) last night: what a severe head-feck. Presents itself as a thriller but turns out to be much more. I've probably re-run the whole thing in my head more times than any other film just to try to unravel the thing.

Anyone who thinks the Filmhouse cinema, or the whole cinema-as-art idea is pretentious might want to give it a miss, but otherwise it's worth a look.

Can't comment on the film you are referring to but it amuses me that people think such films are "pretentious" when they usually a lot closer to representing everyday life than Hollywood and other commercial cinema.

Is the term "arty movies" interchangeable with foreign language films?

I used to love the Filmhouse and GFT.

The Acid House by Irvine Welsh is great, can't find it online though. Probably the only arty film I'm a fan of.
