Can anyone recommend a new sport to try

36 year old, 2 stone overweight male with a twice dislocated knee seeks social wee sporty number, with gsoh for weekly sweaty action.

Anyone tried a new sport recently and loved it? Thinking badminton might be a goer. Any ideas/experiences youse have had?

I'm not sure badminton would be good for a bloke with dislocation of the knee issues B&F. I tried playing it once and found it to be a lot faster than I thought it would be [and I used to play squash but found badminton so much more difficult]. What about table tennis, less gear required and its still fast enough to work up a decent sweat.

Hmm have played badminton a few times with pals in the past and your right there was a fair bit of lunging etc which could be a problem over time. Table tennis is a great shout. Played that with family in their back garden recently and was shit hot - beat my 11 year old ne

It has to be swimming, assuming you can swim . If you don't swim regulary i'm sure you will build up a sweat after doing a lenght or two - it will also be kind to your knee.

I do like swimming it's just that I was looking for something a bit more sociable and where you have a laugh etc - now synchronised swimming could be an option..

How about darts? I'm sure one of our members could give you a few pointers. Where's Jocky Wilson when you need him?

Re: Can anyone recommend a new sport to try

Swimming would be a great choice, particularly with a dodgy knee to consider.

There are bound to be things like swimming clubs and so on which would improve the social aspect of it?

I played badminton loads at school (and for Edinburgh, he said, displaying his unfailing modesty) and never had any knee problems at all, or felt that my knees were under a particularly high level of strain. I always found muscular issues to be more of a concern with badminton - the lunging etc is rotten on your groin and hamstrings, if you don't warm up properly.

Is it not a bit hard (and expensive) getting on a course down your way?

Not as good as Scotland but there are public courses and ones that allow non-members on during the day.

Used to love the Braids.

Go for the public courses Braid Hills is excellent. You only really need 3 irons and a putter to get started, add a wedge later and stay clear of the woods and drivers until you get good.

There are a few golfers on here.

Have you played before? If not, then the Braids suggestion is probably a VERY bad one... (you would need two bags -one for all the balls you'd be about to lose!).

If you're a complete beginner, the easiest (by far) public course in Edinburgh is Portobello... only 9 holes and very short.. give it a try and see if you enjoy it before moving up to Craigentinny (18 holes and slightly longer, although still fairly flat and easy).

Next step is to play either Carrick Knowe or Silverknowes... both longer than Criagentinny but relatively straightforward.

Lastly try the Braids. Pretty hilly and TIGHT with lots of opportunity for awkward lies/bounces.. and lost balls in Gorse bushes! Accuracy is the key as it is shorter than Silverknowes.

All of the above courses are public and you can usually (midweek) just turn up and get on. Weekends can be busier and it is advisable to book (It's also slightly more expensive to play at the weekend).

Many (but not all) private courses in the town also welcome guests (better be a decent player though as they tend to take a dim view of punters hacking divots all over the place, and will expect you to follow dress rules and know a bit of etiquette). Expect to pay about twice as much for a round on a private course, and they will not necessarily be in any better condition than the public courses.. although many of them are very well kept.

Hope this helps.

P.S. weather permitting I'm off tomorrow and if the weather is half way decent I think I'll be taking my clubs for a walk round a course. I'm not a member anywhere now (lapsed my Lothianburn membership this year) so it'll be a public course somewhere. If you (or any other bouncer) feels like a wee game, driop me a PM and we'll see what we can arrange).
