USA JAIL - SOME INTERESTING READING

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPA COUNTY SHERIFF ( ARIZONA ) AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

These are some of the reasons why:

To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the 'tent city jail' to save Arizona from spending tens of millions of dollars on another expensive prison complex.

He has jail meals down to 20 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He banned smoking and pornographic magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but 'G' movies. He says:
'They're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave.'

To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer's money.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel, he replied: 'So these morons will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.'
He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back.'
He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd 2007), the Associated Press reported: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed wire surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

On the Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were overheard chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees.
'This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace,' said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. 'It's inhumane.'
Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. 'Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.'

The same day he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: 'It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!'

Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like yours there would be a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running out of prison spaces.

Sheriff Joe was just re-elected as Sheriff in Maricopa County , Arizona

Re: I like this man's thinking.

Seen the prison programme about this. Amercas hardest prisons or something. Think that the police dogs get more spent on their meal than the inmates.

I might be mistaken, but I think one of the guard towers sports a nifty pink neon sign which flashes "vacancys" at night. Sort of like the one outside Porkies, but not as good.

TBH I like this sort of shit. I also like how the yanks can jail someone for 99years. Ie life in prison means life.

Re: I like this man's thinking.

And the recidivism rate for people who have been in this jail? Absolutely no difference from the time when the person who held the post before was in power.

He's an elected vigilante who re-writes laws based on what he wants them to be rather than what they are. He treats those on remand as though they had been found guilty already. He fails to give people the protection under the US Constitution that they are entitled to. There have been various cases of deaths in custody under his watch. Aye, he's barry right enough...

So how come the US has more people in prison than anywhere else in the world (per capita), higher recidivism rates than any other developed country, and the entire nation continually lives in fear of violent crime then?

just because they have the right ideas doesn't mean they practice them

in Theory (imo) the American system could be very effective, the problem is, its run by idiots (1 name - Bush i need say no more)

We have the same problem in government here, Idiots in charge.

If this guys ideas were implimented across the states, i think there would be a change in attitude to crime,

Prison is not a punishment, for some it is but alot seem to not be bothered by the fact they are in prison, probably liking the fact off free bed and food

in some cases the Americans should make changes (Guns)

Why? It hasn't made any difference in Arizona when it's been implemented there? Why would doing it nationwide mean it was going to be succesful?

Re: I like this man's thinking.

If this guys ideas are so good why do people commit crime in his area.?? Doesnt seem to put them off going to his jail. America has some of the harshest jails around, the death penalty & one of the highest murder rates in the world.(highest for a developed country??)

Maybe takling some of the social issues,im sure Hispanics & Afro Americans make up large proportions of the jail population(ie the poor) will reduce the levels of crime and not some gimmiky prision.

I dinny think Scotland is warm enough for tent prisons.... there would be plenty of deaths in custody... but mostly from hypothermia! .... and just imagine the midges!!

That'd be a disincentive to a life of crime tho'

Re: I like this man's thinking.

On the larger scale yes there are other factors that need to be looked at, i don't disagree with that point,

But looking at the punishment, surely the conditions in prison HAS to put people off committing the crime, and it somehow has to reduce those who have been in prison reoffending,

but the Ideas the Americans have, if implimented along with tackling social issues would help,

I am no brain box on these issues, but surely with a prison like his it has to have an effect,

I could actually. I know this isnae the majority view but imo the role of prison should be for rehabilitation to stop people committing crimes when they get out. I can fully understand societies desire to mete out punishment, and to an extent I accept that. De-humanising people doesn't help with what I think should be the main point of prison though.

I'm also interested in how many folk who are so quick to criticise the prisons as being too easy have actually experienced it themselves, or know people who have? I know a few folk who have been in the jail, and every one of them have absolutely hated it.

My ex-girlfriends brother was in jail, on her first visit to him she was asked to take his PS2 and games, his CD player and a few other luxaries, He came out and after a month said 'i wish i was back in Greenock'

asked why he said it was alot easier to be in prison than out living in his own place, as he said, he had no responsability even for himself, That is not punishment or rehab,

on his release he was offered a place, furnished, also given extra money from the dole, and offered courses left right and centre so he could get a job, to aid him back into society, last i heard he was back in, for the same crime,

I agree that there should be a rehab element to prison, but there has to be the Punishment aspect aswell,
