Exclusive: Cops called to ferry after Ayr Utd and East Fife footballers clash over food fight
[Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register] By Jack Mathieson And Kevan Christie POLICE boarded a ferry after a bust-up between rival Scots football teams over a messy food fight. East Fife players were said to be "covered in chicken tikka and potatoes" after a fracas in the cafeteria during an Irish Sea crossing. They then allegedly tried to pass themselves off as members of the squad of second division rivals Ayr United, who were on the same boat. Ayr chairman Lachlan Cameron said yesterday that his players had behaved impeccably, while the Fifers were "obnoxious and drunk". But his East Fife counterpart Willie Gray hit back, claiming Ayr were mischief-making out of "jealousy". He said: "We are not interested in food fights. If we want to have a fight, we have a real fight." Both teams were making their way back from pre-season outings to Northern Ireland when the trouble erupted on the Larne-Troon crossing last Sunday. Cameron claimed a food fight broke out among East Fife players who, when threatened with arrest, said they were with Ayr United. He said: "I was sitting with all my boys in their tracksuits, all sober and not drinking. "The head steward came down and asked me who was in charge of the Ayr United group. When I said I was, he told me some of our boys were in trouble upstairs. "He said they were drunk, had been having a food fight and were causing a ruckus. "I told him there was no way any of our boys were involved as they were all down with me and none of my boys was drinking. It was the East Fife boys who were drunk and disorderly upstairs. "He told me they said they were with Ayr United so I went upstairs with him and he pointed to the table of five or six guys who were claiming to be Ayr United players. I told him, 'They're not Ayr United, they're East Fife.' " The Ayr chairman went on: "I didn't see them throw food but when I went upstairs some of the East Fife boys were covered in chicken tikka and potatoes. "The only person from Ayr United who mixed with the East Fife players was myself and I had to put up with their bad language and abuse along with all the other passengers around. I left the cafeteria because the East Fife players were obnoxious and drunk, so I went downstairs to play cards with my boys. "I want to make it clear Ayr United had nothing to do with any food fight. None of our players was even in the cafeteria when the food fight is alleged to have taken place. "The police were called and we were stuck on the boat for 45 minutes to an hour while the police came on." East Fife manager David Baikie yesterday played down the incident. He said: "As far as I know, there was no high jinks going on." And club chairman Willie Gray dismissed the allegations. He said: "We are not interested in food fights. "If we want to have a fight, we have a real fight. We will show Ayr United what a fight is when we play them." East Fife were promoted last season to the second division where they now keep company with Ayr United. Gray added: "I think it is all down to Ayr United wanting to cause some bother here. "We are the only club in Scottish football with no debt. We get allegations flung at us all the time through jealousy. "I am amazed at Ayr United even commenting on it. I have no issue with my players. There will be no internal disciplinary action. It won't even be discussed. "If Ayr United look after their own business, we will look after ours." A police spokeswoman said: "Police were called to an incident at 7.35pm last Sunday. "It was a report that two men were causing a disturbance on a ferry which was just about to dock at Troon harbour. "Police attended and spoke to the men involved. No complaint was made and no further police action was taken." A spokesman for ferry operators P&O Irish Sea said: "There was a minor incident and police were called."
