Alternative Lifestyles

Following on from FTJT's thread about working for a living.....

I have this daydream every now and again of an alternative lifestyle that goes something like this: sell the house and buy a boat, sail between scotland (in the summer) and the med and n.africa in the winter, picking up work as we went. Anything really just to pay for the boats maintenance, fuel (would mostly sail though) and food. Ideally there'd be a network of families doing the same thing to provide mutual support (one of the key problems with the plan)..... sort of 21st century water based Pavees (travellers) if you like....now theres plently of flaws in my plan and i doubt if it will ever get off the shore but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has lived, is living or would consider living an "alternative" lifestyle to the "norm" ie does your house own you? do you live to work? do you feel like a cog in the machine? are you free?

does anyone else have any dreams about escaping from all that?

ps i'm not feckin into crystals, tie dye or wheatgrass juice

Re: Alternative Lifestyles

When life was troubling, i'd dream about going into hermit mode, flee society, live alone, go up into the hills, desert, anywhere for solitude, sheer bliss. After a couple of hours meditating about it, i'd switch to plan B, go and watch Hibs, sit in the boozer and get sloshed. Alternatively i guess my ideal lifestyle would be roaming Europe, preferably near the Mediteranean. They camper vans look spot on for running away in.

Re: Alternative Lifestyles

Hey gun ainm! I think Gary Glitter tried that around the Med and found a few new friends.

My dream, for what its worth, was after my big win on the lottery (pools as it was at first) was to buy a big private boat and sail, like you, round the Med and Caribbean.

I was explaining this to my friends as we looked over the Marina at Puerto Banus many moons ago and pointed over to a rather large yacht berthed on the other side.

The chap at the next table leaned over and told us I’d have to win the pools for a few weeks running to get anywhere near the money needed. It was a Sheiks yacht and he was the wine waiter! A wine waiter on an Arab yacht!!!

LoL - i could maybe downscale from the luxury 200ft yacht with wine waiter et al. i do know a vcouple of guys that work on rich folks yachts (russian oligarchs) but to be honest despite the great lifestyle it could offer to the single guy I wouldnt do it (not being single and not wanting to be). I reckon you could get a decent liveaboard that needed a bit of patching up for say 50-75k not cheap but then not lottery winning territory either...

Re: Alternative Lifestyles

i would like to do something like that. however, practical realities and responsibilities to family mean it's not possible.

thats why in real life most of the folk that actually get to do it are trustafarians, or at the other end of the scale complete drop outs.

more modestly i'd be happy working in an outdoors shop in the lake district getting discounts on patagonia gear, and spending my free time tramping around the hills. still, alas, impossible.

But is it? I've been lucky and really liked jobs most jobs I've done, but I was really impressed with a guy I met at Coylumbridge who gave kids ski lessons. Moved there from down south and is now really settled. Wouldn't go back - ever. And he's essentially doing that outdoor pursuits thing and he's married with kids, has a house and all that and does what he loves.

have you seen the prices of the houses down there though Archie - they compare with here. I couldn't go there without getting a comparable job to what I have here, and a) there aren't any and b) it would defeat half the point.

I'll just have to write that best selling novel I keep failing to be arsed to start.

Re: Alternative Lifestyles

Ive met a few alternative lifestyle types on my travels though SE Asia. Usually just ageing hippies who went back packing as students and never gave it up. What Ive found they all have in common is that they are mostly posh middle class University drop outs.
Ive never met a normal working class bloke doing the hippie trail. Probably because they dont have an inheritance to support them.
