On Friday I took my bairn to feed the ducks at Hollyrood park. Just imagine his wee face as a mummy duck proudly swims by with 8 of the cutest, fluffiest lil ducklings you've ever seen! Knowing what it's like to be a proud new parent I make sure every single bit of bread gets chucked in their direction for a good feed. What happened next will haunt me forever. A flock of vicious seaguls spy the bread in the water and swoop down, stealing the grub from the ducklings. Nasty bastards, I think to my self. Just then the mammy duck goes absolutely. I look over to see two seagulls tearing a duckling clean in half. Another gull flys off with a baby duck. One bites off a newborn's head with one swoop. It's carnage. After only about a minute. Mummy duck, is left with no babies only a few soft, soft feathers to remember them by. I honestly think I saw her shed a tear. Seriously, the guilt is killing me. I had to get that off my chest.

That's fuckin awful for your kid to see. But why feel guilty, you couldn't have imagined that was going to happen?

I feel guilty every day, when I think back on the wrong things I have done, things that I won't go into but left others in a worse position. I am not proud of some of the things I have done, or not done in some cases. But I have reached an accommodation with my conscience whereby I try to do better in the future (genuinely) and in return my conscience tells me that I am not really evil, just foolish at times and capable of bad decisions at others.

The chances are the seagulls would have noticed the ducklings anyway and went to work. It must have been a horrible thing for a bairn to see.

Seagulls a nasty big bastards. I seen one tearing apart an injured pigeon in the new street car park last week.

What a terrible story.. I hope it's not true, but suspect that it may be.

So you single handedly were responsible for the deaths of those 8 sweet cute little ducklings! (or maybe your bairn threw some bread too!)

The bairn will be traumatised!

....

Seriously though, dinny beat yourself up about it. The gulls may have ended up eating the wee ducks even if you'd not been there.

bad one. but all this stuff about proccie jr being traumatised is nonsense, don't be worrying about that sort of thing. this is life, for better or worse. kids used to be exposed to much worse and still are in most places. it's upsetting, but it's also a learning experience about how nature really is. he'll be fine.

on more than one occasion. Make swans look genteel - although they only launch attacks when they feel threatened. Gulls are the hyenas of the air.

Wee babies ducks wouldn't have a chance, bread or no bread.

Mind you every time I argue with a vegetarian I always hit them with the 'really we're just animals and in nature animals eat other animals' line so cest la vie, circle of life and all that.

Saw a squirrel get knocked down in front of a bloke with his wee boy. Concerned father was trying to careful reassure the boy and usher him away but the boy just wanted to prod it to see if it was really dead. I think his dad was more upset than he was.

Did see the last of a row of ducklings knocked own crossing a road once. The um was clearly a bit upset. Cretin that did it could have missed it easily!!!

Indeed.

Seeing birds ripped in half won't have any effect on him.
In particular, he won't think that because YOU his father was the catalyst for the gruesome end of these wee feathered babies that it is somehow acceptable or even laudable to hunt down and kill our feathered friends.

i remember my dad putting a squirrel out of it's misery with a huge mallett after it had been hit by a car(not sure if it was actaully my dad that had hit it)

it happened at a boys club five a side tournament so there was quite a crowd watching
