You can't blame Dubai for wanting to develop tourism and finance, they are using their oil revenues to build an economy for the future when the oil dries up.
But the elite level this is taking place on is quite sickening. It will only ever be affordable to the megarich. Meanwhile half the world is starving.

It'll all end in tears when the balloon goes up.

.
The palm tree resort that is shown in some of the links is very exclusive. When it was built it was primarily marketed to the world's top sports and movie celebrities. Those owning properties there include Ashley and Cheryl Cole, Beckham Inc, Steven Gerrard and so on...

As for the stature of some of the structures, long gone are the days when one building was the tallest on the earth for a long period of time. Long gone the days of wistfully staring at a children's encyclopedia with photos of the Empire State and thinking it was both out of reach and uniquely remarkable.

Mind you, I was still like a kid and thrilled to bits to finally get to stand at the top viewing platform a few years back

It is the bridge at Carrick a rede in Norn Irn that was the one that nearly ended me

http://www.brilliantireland.com/uplo...ck_arede_4.jpg

About 100ft up above the sea, on a windy day, crossing a rope bridge that would have done Indiana Jones proud

So relieved and proud to have braved the crossing - only to suddenly realise the only way back was (of course) back the same way

Re: Views From The Worlds Tallest Building

I've been up the CN tower (which was at the time the worlds tallest unsupported structure - it may still be?)... but I stopped short of walking or lying on the glass floor section like some folk were doing, taking pictures looking straight down.

Have to say that I dinny fancy walking over this glass floor either...

: THE OFFICIAL SITE OF THE GRANDCANYON SKYWALK :

It's miles up (several times higher than any skyscrapers anyway!)

Re: Views From The Worlds Tallest Building

Vertigo city for me.

Whilst I was driving through Mont Blanc recently I stopped just before the tunnel to look at the Aiguille du midi / Dent du Geant cabel car. Basically a wire suspended between two 14,000 ft mountains.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, would ever tempt me on this. This is my room 101!

I was taken there as a 15 y/o and completely bottled going over it. Kudos to you for going over.

Not entirely true. As more hotels get built out there supply will start to catch up with the demand making it one of the most accessable destinations in the world. They wouldnt build theme parks twice the size of Disney that can hold 200,000 people a day just for the mega-rich.
In 10 years dubai will be bigger than Florida and cost much the same for an average family, but the standard of hotels, parks and weather will be better.

I was there last year and loved everything about it, the hotel was easily the best hotel I've ever stayed and the cost was about the same as a similar hotel in New York or Paris.Cant wait to go back in October.
