Films

Couple'a questions.

What's your favs?

I love Tarantino. True Romance was part of my up-bringing. Kill Bill 2 is quite possibly my favourite film to date. Love the violent/gangsta stuff for some reason. Love Casino. Goodfellas goes without saying. And loads more violent stuff. I'm a man ffs. But I'm a bufty as well. Loved "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind", even though only women have ever agreed with me.

Where best to get them? If this thread educates me in a lot of classics then how do I get them? Is there an exhaustive web site that makes them easy to loan/ buy cheap? I'd love to watch some of the old classics but have no idea where from.

So. Films. Elaborate my friends.

TBH i think Tarantino is quite possibly the most over rated fecker ever. I was enjoying one of his movies, From dusk til dawn, when all of a sudden everyone in the biker bar turned into a vampirey type thing. That was enough for me, sat and watched the rest in a kinda stunned silence. Pisstake, pure and simple (as Hearsay once said)

Anyhoo, Lovefilm.com has a great collection of movies, relatively cheap, free postage and keep them for as long as you want. Here's the link.

Re: Films

Have to say that Dusk till Dawn was probably the worst Tarantino film ever.... his other stuff has been much better, although he can sometimes try too hard to make them "stylish".

I'd find it hard to pick a single film that I think is the best ever, as my tastes change depending on my mood and while somedays I might think that The Shawshank Redemption was the best film ever, on other days I feel that I prefer others, and I do have pretty eclectic tastes. Although I generally like movies made from Stephen King stories, there are some that should just never have been made (The Running Man for example.. good story, ripped to shreds in order to cast Arnie Schwarzenneger in the starring role!)

Also, although foreign, black and white, subtitled, arthouse, (or even bollywood !) movies tend to leave me cold, I can think of at least one film with each of the characteristics listed above that I like... (just as long as the film does not fulfil all of those categories at once please!)

Re: Films

Varied taste in films..

Ben Hur is my favourite movie of all time..absolutely brilliant considering when it was made. 12 Angry men is one of my favourites as well, superb acting, and the dialogue and direction is wonderful.

In the last 20 years or so for me there has not been a better movie than Pulp Fiction. It's got everything. Brilliant dialogue, clever interweaving storyline, great acting, very funny, and a fantastic soundtrack. Every scene has an impact and a meaning, and I loved all the movie references all the way through it.

I love movies. A bit of escapism combined with a bit of violence is what appeals to me; sword and sandal is a favourite genre, historical fiction more generally also, plus war films, gangsters, thrillers etc.

Gladiator, Spartacus, Ben Hur, Kingdom of Heaven, Braveheart, The Patriot, Master and Commander, The Duellists, Lawrence of Arabia, Gallipoli, The Thin Red Line, Apocalypse Now, We Were Soldiers, The Great Escape, Saving Private Ryan, Dances with Wolves, Excalibur, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Goodfellas, Casino, The Godfather trilogy, Gangs of New York, Blood Diamond, etc etc

This list could easily be mine, recently saw Kingdom of Heaven and really enjoyed it, i would add The Name of the Rose and The Wind That Shakes The Barley. The music in some of the movies above, is quite outstanding.
With the weather bordering on tropical thunderstorms today and the house my own, i may dig out a dusty dvd. Which one though ?
