All the talk of whether folks like Murray or not - and why - had me thinking...

Do you need to like your sports heroes and if so why?

I think the word hero implies great liking. I can think of plenty of folk I don't like but whose footballing talents I admire, but I'd never describe them as heroes: Rooney, Gazza, Ronaldo, etc. On the other hand the footballers I most admire, I like on a personal basis: Sauzee, Stanton, Keith Wright...

Don't think we HAVE to like them, but it is extremely helpful to like them, as that way, the sport is better promoted, and you want to be just as good, if not better than the sporting person.
