Iraqi translators
The Times is having a go at the Weeg.
[Only Registered Users Can See Links. They complained of living among drunks and drug addicts, being abused and spat at, and of feeling isolated and unable to work. One girl of 9 had had her hijab torn off by one of her new neighbours. Abdul, 71, one of three Iraqis who risked their lives working for British troops in Basra and were resettled in April with 15 dependents, advised others in a similar position to stay in Iraq. The Times doesnt seem to give a fuck about the Scots who have lived in this all their lives. "The Union that has served us so well"....

Re: Iraqi translators
Yet it was the national UK press which continuously heaped pressure onto the government to "sort" the asylum system and make it tougher. It's to their eternal discredit that they did so imo, not as a point of principle, but as a matter for political advantage.
And the reason they are in Glasgow was because of pressure in London for more dispersal from there. Councils bidded for asylum seekers and the funding that would come with them. Glasgow was able to come in cheaply because they have such a high number of vacant properties. Where were The Times when that bidding process which treated people fleeing from persecution as economic assets was going on? Were they shouting about how this was akin to a system of slavery (ie bidding on human beings who will give you an economic advantage)? Were they asking why Glasgow (and many of the others who bidded) had a stock of empty housing during a time of acute housing shortages? In other words, The Times should stop whining since they were part of the press which railroaded the government into these sorts of policies to start with. And aye, Stirlinghibee is right. The housing isn't just shite for these Iraqi interpreters, it's shite for everyone who lives there.

Another more in depth article on the same subject. The comment this guy makes sums up this whole thing for me. "Are the dire living conditions of working- class Glaswegians only a concern when foreigners have to deal with them? There is a nasty undercurrent to this article which suggests that people living in deprived areas are scum, at least when compared to middle- class Iraqis." Neil, Nova Scotia, Canada
