Irene Sendler, known to many as the “female Schindler”, rescued children and babies imprisoned in the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw, smuggling them out in bags, or through the sewers, and hiding them with friendly families around Warsaw.

Sendler was a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, but lost out to Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States.

an inspiring story and a real hero, whatever her own modesty claims.

I read a book last year by Mary Berg who escaped the WW2 Polish ghettoes by another route.

An optimism of the spirit survives throughout her book. I was particularly moved by the community beimg able to create educational establishments with little or no external resources. Despite the horrific conditions, there appeared to be a real thirst for learning and understanding that transcended the brutality and starvation around them.
