Well done Third Lanark

Don't worry, I'm not pished and you haven't fallen through a wormhole in the space/time continuum!

At the start of this season a wee bit of Scottish football tradition was restored when the Scottish Amateur FA allowed Third Lanark Athletic (Third's original name) to play in division 3 of the Greater Glasgow Amateur League.

Once again Third Lanark Athletic in a red and white strip have been playing at Cathkin Park 40 years after the originals.

They had a disastrous start to their existence this season picking up just 3 points out of the first 9 games and losing 38 goals in the process (2 7-0's and a 7-1)!

However they've turned things about and are heading for possibly a mid table finish and clocked up their biggest win 7-0 away from home today after winning 6-2 last Thursday.

I hope they go onwards and upwards because I'm a right traditionalist and I love seeing something rise from the ashes. Feck every corrupt businessman who tries to kill a football club.

Except Vlad of course.

Ach it's all romantic nonsense, but I'm with you on the being kind of chuffed that it's happened.

Without that feeling about football, what would it be?

There's a guy that travels with the Tartan Army that I've met a good few times who went only to Scotland games after Third Lanark went to the wall as he couldn't have another club side.

Hope he's been along to see them....

For amateur football aye. Cathkin Park is maintained by the city council since it is, at the moment, a city municipal park. Third Lanark need to use the neighbouring Holyrood Sports Centre for changing facilities though since apart from the disused overgrown terracing on three sides, there is only the grass pitch at Cathkin.

Perhaps well should play there, I bet there is more grass.

Re: Well done Third Lanark

Third lanark had a go at this in the mid 70's. A few of my mates and me played for them at under 16 level. We used to train at Langside college and played our games at the pitches behind Hampden (toryglen). I played a season but chucked it because of the travelling. Ended up playing amateur in Cumbernauld. Oh the memories!!!!

Aye there's been various attempts but this one with a full blown adult Third Lanark Athletic playing at Cathkin is the most serious and promising yet. Local businesses are getting behind them and they're going from strength to strength.

They are intending seek admission to the Junior league in the future which may have ramifications for Pollok since their sizeable elderly support is comprised heavily of ex-Third Lanark supporters.

I wish them all the best. I remember how keen the folk who started the team back then were. I have some really good memories of those times particularly when we went to see the old Cathkin. You could still see the old terracing it was quite emotional for those guys. we did quite well that season too. I remember beating Celtic Boys at Toryglen.
