The Wire. Best series in the history of television. Beats even The Sopranos. Don't get me wrong, I loved The Sopranos and have all the series on DVD but some were better than others (those dream sequence episodes at the start of the final series were bollocks). Every series of The Wire has been sublime and the last one I watched (series 4; the 5th and last series has just aired in the States) was the best yet. For the sheer depth of the characters and the complexity of the story arcs, it's no exaggeration to compare it to a novel by Dickens or Tolstoy. It's a pity that no terrestrial channel has picked it up and that more people don't know about it. The first couple of seasons can be picked up pretty cheap now, so do yourselves a favour. You won't be disappointed. It's the sort of show that once you get into it you start evangelising about it. But don't take my word for it, here's The Guardian's Charlie Brooker putting it better than I ever could:

I honestly haven't watched it.

Missed the first series, then kinda figured i wouldn't be able to fully understand the next series. I really must get round to getting the boxset, or even better, figuring out how to download them Torrenty thingummybobs

The Wire is now available on virgin 'on demand' TV from the beginning.

I've only wanted to watch it from the start, it's no use picking it up in season 3.It's very good and you can see the thing has the capacity to develop.I'm still gonna say The Sopranos though, and the West Wing is pretty close too.

As an aside, HBO must the best TV station out there...Sopranos,Wire,West Wing(?) & another series I'm watching just now...Band of Brothers, all feckin great.

Anyone know where i can get a cheapish DVD of the series?

We dont want to sit behind pillars (Well at certain grounds it's ok). We dont want to watch guys who cant control a football. But that's what we get........
