Most influential book of yer life?

And did they make a difference?

My first : Something by Michael Hardcastle.Taught me sporting integrity. Did Ronaldo or Drogba read this? I f#ckin doubt it.

Then : Stephen King : "The stand". You chose your side there and then.

JD Salinger : "catcher in the Rye" Woe is me.

Hemingway : "For whom the Bells toll." Wow.

Neitzche "Beyond good and evil"

Colin Wilson : "The outsider". Fuck it all.

Fyodor Dostoevsky : "The Idiot". Well, then again.

Photo album of my son. Awwhhh, but true.

Missed a few, I know, 1984 springs to mind, and Huxley's "Brave New World", and "Island". And many more. Socrates springs to mind. Hardly bettered.

Discuss.

I'm not a reader TBH, but "Catcher in the Rye" and "The grapes of wrath", both of which I had to read at school were very good.

Viz. Private Eye.

Not technically books, actually not books at all.

Perhaps the major influence they have had is to make me think of them when someone mentions influential books. And they aren't.

But the Viz annuals are books so it does qualify. "The big hard number 2" was a good read!

And I model myself on Sid.. :ANYWORD: I've tried most of his chatup lines and can confirm that the stories are in fact true to life!

"Lucky Poet" - Hugh MacDiarmid's autobiography

"Meetings With Remarkable Men" by G.I. Gurdjieff

"The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail" by Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln. Not so much what the book said but what it led to in my life.

Re: Most influential book of yer life?

i can't really think of any novel that's been very influential on me.

most of the wise ones say stuff one already knows, as they tend to have been written some time back.

Its worth re-reading Catcher in the Rye as your view of Holden Caulfield changes.

Sorry, I'm not, though I once had a book signed one of his 'descendants' ('HRH' Prince Michael of Albany and had a brief conversation with the messiah (David Shayler)

Try the "Earth Children Series" by "Jean M Auel".

It's a wonderful series about life,30,000 BC.

Wow!

Re: Most influential book of yer life?

I love reading but I'm not sure if I could say any particular book has been influential in my life with the exception of the Bible.

I was moved to tears by Captain Corelli's Mandolin, which is something very, very few books have done. And I've laughed out loud at some of the things I've read in Damon Runyon's stories recently.

Trainspotting was a revelation when it came out.

although a book called in and against the state by the London Edinburgh weekend return group has had a great influence on my social nad political views.

"The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William L Shirer.

I would give a copy of this to every kid on the day they start secondary school.

Re: Most influential book of yer life?

Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States literally did change my life. Made me realise how much I loved history and what good history writing could be like. Jacked in an Environmental Health degree to convert to Modern History, which I then studied all the way to doctoral level. And now I work in IT. Ho hum.

Re: Most influential book of yer life?

Might be a bit of a predictable choice but I'd say Jack Kerouac's On the Road. Not the best book I've ever read (by any means). But in terms of influence it was one that opened me up to a lot of literature and gave me the travel bug. Both continue to play a big part in my life today.
