Cider House - Abortion
Just finished The Cider House Rules by John Irving and have to say I really enjoyed this book. The reason I've brought it up on the Cowshed though is that throughout the book, abortion takes a prominent role.
I won't go into the details but I will say that it's worth a read whether you agree or dissagree with abortion. I've not seen the film yet. Set among the apple orchards of rural Maine, it is a perverse world in which Homer Wells' odyssey begins. As the oldest unadopted offspring at St Cloud's orphanage, he learns about the skills which, one way or another, help young and not-so-young women, from Wilbur Larch, the orphanage's founder, a man of rare compassion with an addiction to ether. Dr Larch loves all his orphans, especially Homer Wells. It is Homer's story we follow, from his early apprenticeship in the orphanage, to his adult life running a cider-making factory and his strange relationship with the wife of his closest friend.

Re: Cider House - Abortion
The film is a surprisingly good watch/adaptation, but I`d leave it a wee while before watching. 4/5 for me. (the film, that is.)

Re: Cider House - Abortion
The film is good but it is true what they say that it never does justice to a book and can often,if watched after reading a book, be dissapointing as you will already have built up your own image of the characters and dialect.
Nonetheless still found the film to be entertaining 4/5
