Schools withdraw anti-homophobia books for 5-year-olds after Muslim parents complain

The books were removed from two schools in Bristol after complaints from parents
A council has removed books used for an anti-homophobic programme at two primary schools after parents complained, authorities said today.

Bristol City Council said it had temporarily removed books and teaching materials from Easton Church of England Primary School and Bannerman Road Community School and Children's Centre.

The decision to remove the books was taken on Friday after parents took part in meetings held at the two schools.

The books and teaching materials, which are predominantly aimed at five to 10-year-old children, were introduced in an attempt to deter homophobic bullying.

I'm with the parents to an extent on this but the dliema is who to offend and not offend. Are a minorities prejudices OK? I think not.

Policy is a stupid one IMO - you can teach respect and tolerance without going into the complexities of sexual relationships at an age when it goes straight over their heads.

Re: PC Dilema

I don't think they should be specific with regards to any form of bullying it should all just be classed as bullying being unacceptable period not homosexual bashing bullying is wrong or race/colour/crede/religion bullying. At the end of the day they treat kids like morons and think they have to spell out what is slander and what is not, as if they didn't know calling someone something vile relating to sexual preference is wrong and was somehow different to calling someone fat for example!

Re: PC Dilema

How many 5-10 year olds have decided on their sexual preferences anyway... I hope none have, so it shouldn't be an issue at primary school.

I know that primary aged kids may call each other various names to upset each other (including no doubt - Poof) however it can hardly be termed as homophobia at that age!

indeed. can you imagine them being withdrawn in response to whinging from tambourine bashers? (doubly ironic given that a CoE school was stocking them)

that said, this would be one of these funny ones were the muslims would be backed by the champions of secular liberalism, because clearly this kind of ideological indoctrination has no place in state schools.

Re: PC Dilema

A thought.

These books, by the [English] Department of Education, probably introduced after extensive consultation with schools, parents, child psychologists, child ‘experts’ et al, because that's what they do, have been withdrawn by a single school following complaints from parents who have no reported expertise in child education. I’m assuming the Department of Education has expertise in that area!

I don’t think it’s a PC dilemma at all. If the parents object then arrangements should have been made to withhold that part of the child’s education [does that sound right?] and if their child transgresses the rules then hell mend them, instead of withholding it from the whole school and now all the children are lacking in this area of their education [does it sound better now?].

I’m a bit with what was reportedly said by some Australian Minister, ‘If you don’t like it here sling your hook,’ [I think he actually said Fark off!] – ‘we are Australians and this is what we do.’ Or the Dutch who show potential immigrants a video which includes same sex couples snoggin’. ‘If you don’t like this don’t come and live here. This is what we are.’

under what mandate are schools licensed to indoctrinate very small children with the 'correct' view to take of homosexuality?

i personally think such ideological cant should either be removed from the state school system, or else be instituted within ideological schools which advertise the particular belief system they'll be putting forward, so that parents can make an informed choice.

The material wasn't about homosexuality it was about homophobic bullying, and probably within a comprehensive anti-bullying strategy.
