Would not be surprising. They have a very good set up all the way through from the boys club section up to the East of Scotland team. They also have their brand new infrastructure completely in place...

Hurrah - we may still have an Edinburgh derby when the "big team" go down with the subs...

Think they'd have to start in Div 3 like Airdrie did when they took over Clydebank.

Was it not the case that Clydebank were in Division 3 anyway?

If I remember rightly Airdrie United were refused entry into the league in favour of Gretna, as the SFL thought Gretna would be more stable!!

It was only after they had missed out on entry that they moved to buy out Clydebank and as far as the SFL were concerned Clydebank were simply applying for a change of name, stadium etc rather than being emptied from the league.

It was the same scenario as Meadowbank in that it was just a name change and change of stadium.

That being the case they would be able to play in division 1 and all they'd need to do is apply to league for a name change. Given that it has happened on 2 occassions previously I dont think the league could knock it back.

Sorry but IMHO we've too many 'professional' clubs.

We need a few to die.

K,Spartans are building a training ground, several pitches for the community and will have a 2700 capacity ground.

If Spartans can't get into our league then no-one should......

Fair play to them. However, what is their gates going to be?

If Meadowbank Thistle failed...

England has 92 clubs. Us with less than 10% of the English population have 40..

They probably deserve a chance in the SFL. My preferred way of them getting SFL status though would be having a pyramid system in place and a top league of 16 teams.

Re: Spartans in the SFL?

IMO it would be a disaster

would there really be a support for them? could be a gretna mk2 in the farce stakes

plus surely being an edinburgh club there's a good chance they could become our rivals and we'd need to start hating them

linlithgow rose and many other junior teams put most 2nd and 3rd division sfl teams to shame with their supports and grounds

but would they really want to come up to play in the sfl? they'll get bigger gates and bigger games were they are

I really dont think wishing for clubs to die is the answer. Football clubs are important to towns and communities and that should remain so. The question is more to do with what level these clubs should be playing at. How many of Scotland's 40 league clubs are professional (in the sense that their players are full-time)? Around half I would suggest. The rest would (and should) continue playing at some level, even if they only have a few hundred regular fans. It's only a small country, as you have pointed out, so we can't really expect the less successful clubs to be packing them in.

No doubt there are some problems with the 40 team/4 league set-up, and maybe one of them is again the pointless way in which we often try to copy or be like England in a footballing sense.

I think I'd rather go back to an old-style system of two divisions, one of sixteen and a second of maybe 18 or 20. There should also be pyramid systems with perhaps a couple of teams going out of the league to keep things interesting and get the dud clubs in smaller regional leagues where they probably belong. Many European countries have this type of system but once again we like to be different for some reason known only to "the powers that be."
