Harriet Harman, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, has been ridiculed for donning a stab-proof vest to tour her own constituency.

Miss Harman took to the streets of Peckham, south London, yesterday surrounded by several police officers.

But it seems manpower alone wasn't sufficient to make her feel safe on the streets and she was also issued with a kevlar-reinforced jacket.

Her decision has been met with disbelief by constituents.

Beatrice Smith, 63, said despite regular trouble on some of the neighbourhood's estates, locals were never issued stab vests.

The leader is a dithering incompetent and the depute leader is terrified of walking the street.The Home Secretary won't go out at night without bodyguards.

"It was just a courtesy, there was no security issue whatsoever, it was almost like wearing the kit when you go out with the team," she said.

What Beatrice probably failed to realise is that there are doubtless more people who would queue up to stab Harriet Harman than her or her neighbours
