blatter against weedgie switch
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has spoken out against the possibility of the Old Firm moving to England's top flight.
The idea of Celtic and Rangers moving down south has often been mooted but world football's governing body would not endorse it. "It would be detrimental to Scotland if the two best teams leave to try and play in England," he told BBC Sport. "It is also good for the political aspects that the British Associations keep their different leagues." Blatter and his Uefa counterpart Michel Platini are in Scotland for the International Football Association Board meeting in Gleneagles. And Blatter has promised to hear Scottish FA chief executive Gordon Smith's proposals to make use of video evidence to punish players for diving. This season, Fifa regulations prevented Scottish referees from taking part in a scheme where they could penalise players retrospectively if they felt they had dived or feigned injury. 606: DEBATE It would be better for all of the other SPL teams if the Old Firm left Joe_banana But Blatter said: "This is an item which is on the agenda. "Gordon is a former footballer, so he knows what he's talking about and I am eager to hear his argument. "However with the subject of diving, it is a delicate matter. "It is easier to see a pull of the leg or a kick at somebody or an elbow but I am happy to discuss it." Blatter added that he was happy with the Scottish FA's decision not to participate in a GB Olympic team. And he encouraged the Scots to bid for future Fifa youth events. "The Under-16 World Cup was a big success here in 1989 and generated huge interest," said the Swiss. "Scotland is a good candidate and has three outstanding stadiums in Glasgow. "But it's a small country and organising a major tournament on its own would be a little bit difficult." Blatter and Platini will make the Scottish Cup semi-final draw on Saturday, which will be broadcast live by BBC One Scotland and BBC Radio Scotland at 1705 GMT. |

Would be brilliant. The race for third place now would be first place if they were not here!

would be a dream come true, an open league would be great, but keep the yams, we need to be able to brag to someone when we are on a 10 in a row run off league titles

BBC Scotland mate
I have been in favour of the OF pissing off before, but now, having really thought it through very carefully and taken everything into account, I have to admit that I WANT THOSE C*NTS TO GTF Because not only will it rebalance the Scottish football leagues on a sensible basis but it will also teach those bastards some humility.

Thank god!
Sepp confirmed that a GB team could have ramifications for the independence of the home nations. Good I say! This should kill the debate stone dead. I personally couldn't face a world where we were expected to support an English team that'd be thinly disguised as the GB representatives in all competitions. Would the GB team trying to qualify for the World cup or European championships go out to the provinces to play their games, or would they all have been expected to be played at Wembley? This was just a greedy attempt by the London olympic committee to cash in. They know that there's likely to be little interest from the English public in a competition that they are not participating in, and they want to make money from bums on seats. Remember when Scotland hosted the under 16s world cup, the English media didn't just chose to not cover the competition (which they'd failed to qualify for)... they staged an alternative match on the day of the opening ceremony and opening match! (I seem to remember it as being England v Germany - but I could be wrong)... to deflect any interest from Scotland. It was the ultimate case of sour grapes... well I say feck them!

Re: Blatter knocks a GB footy team on the head....
Well done Sepp!
We should now try to stir things up by saying how wonderful it would be if an English football team could be present for the olympics. All it needs is for England , Scotland , NI and Wales to send individual teams to the olympics. Simple isn't it?

Re: Blatter knocks a GB footy team on the head....
In reply to Mr Hibster....
Apathy about the tournament wouldn't have been so bad, I could have taken that, however to actually go to the lengths to put on an alternative match between two teams that couldn't manage to qualify for the actual world cup was a bit naughty. Apart from the recent few years Sky coverage of the schools home internationals, when did the BBC (EBC?) ever show youth football... yet on the day of Scotlands showpiece tournament, they chose (for once) to schedule a game to detract from it. Nah.... Sorry, but I think my feelings are justified in this case.

Re: blatter against weedgie switch
I wish they would really GTF. I mean physically leave Scotland.
Rangers can go to NI and Celtic to the ROI. In fact, now I think of it. I wish they would take Glasgow with them (with a small circle of land left around HH when he reads this!!

Re: blatter against weedgie switch
There is absolutely no danger of the Old Firm ever being allowed to leave the SPL to take part in another country's league. The whole idea has always been totally ridiculous.
Much as I loathe and detest them and everything they stand for, they are scottish clubs and therefore they will continue to play in Scotland. Both clubs can moan and greet about lack of money to compete at a decent level in Europe, but they are where they are. Other much smaller clubs in Europe have achieved much more than they have in European competition with nowhere near the same sort of turnover. In addition, despite what the English FA and the English media may say publically, the whole idea of those two "clubs" with their repulsive sectarianism infesting the English league turns their stomachs. Particularly as two of their member clubs would have to drop out to accomodate them. When they had a preliminary vote on the issue a couple of years ago the result was 20-0 against. Enough said.. By far the most bampot idea I have heard in British football in the last ten years.
