Why did the Turkey cross the border?

I think it is very enlightened of the Turkish military to recruit so many physically disadvantaged people in to their ranks. Pictured are the 7th Humphback division advancing into northern Iraq.

I've actually been waiting for a thread to start about this.

The Kurds should get their own state out of Turkey. It is working just peachy for Kosovo, should work just the same for the Kurds.

I'm curious as what others think about Kosovo and why they think the Russians and Serbs are so wary of Kosovo independence and what it really means to those nations and Europe as a whole now that the KLA is a legitmate force to an extent.

Spot on with that question, cos if the Kosovan Albanians have a case so do the Kurds. And not only at the expense of Turkey. They want bits of Iraq and Syria.

Serbs have traditionally looked to Russia for support (hence First World War) because of religious, ethnic, cultural ties. Russia are also wary of their own probs in places like Chechnya. The principle of self-determination kinda gets complicated on the question of who can be for political purposes considered a 'group'.

For the same reason Serbian Kosovo which was inhabited by ethnic Albanians was allowed to declared an independent nation. A region of Turkey in habited by ethnic Kurds should be alllowed to declare themselves independent. Followed shortly by a independent Basque nation and Catalan nation in Spain. And there is that nasty wee conflict about to heat up again between Armenia and Azerbijan. Why not? If its good enough for Kosovo its good enough anywhere in Europe i would think.

I say this, because I am interested in how Europe and the EU will deal with this. It is in Europe's backyard and the implications go well beyond the creation of a new nation state. What will become the new security forces in Kosovo are rements of the KLA which was financed, trained and armed by Pakistan, Iran, the Taliban of Afghanistan and a variety of sources from Osama Bin Laden's organisation initially to create a greater Muslim state operating under Sharia law.

And this is one of the main underlying reasons for both the Serb and Russian responses to that goes beyond the historic links between Serbs and Russians. For the Russian's Chechnya was a wake up call as what beginning to ferment in the region. The idea of an area of strategic importance such as the Balkan's being under Islamic fundamentalist control is something everyone should give serious thought to.


My question is, now what Europe? The idea of nations or a section of European terrority ruled under Sharia principles is counter to the ideals of the EU, and yet by the creation of an independent Kosovo can there be any objection to this?
