Question Your Favourite Malt - Help Needed

A friend here in Fort Worth is opening his 2nd Bar. He wants to have a wide range of Malts on offer and has asked for help. Who better to ask than the selective Bounce palates? Of particular interest would be expensive vintages. He has a $8000 bottle of Brandy gracing his current establishment and would like a similiar talking point for his new place. All recommendations gratefully appreciated.

I'm an Islay Malt man myself.

Re: Your Favourite Malt - Help Needed

Islay are my favourites too but the best whisky in the world in my opinion is the 21 yr old Glenfiddich Gran Reserva aged in cuban rum casks. It's mellow, sweet, tasty and unique. It's about £60 a bottle over here. Not sure how much it would be in the US. I actually think it's cheap for what it is.

Whisky Magazine Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and rounded with clean malty notes. Chocolate, caramelised banana, some citric notes, orange pulp, toffee and spice.
Palate: The chocolate comes back giving a sweet, balanced dram. Good mature malt character.
Finish: Chocolate, coffee and orange peel.
Comment: Good balance with the rum at no point overwhelming the whisky.

Re: Your Favourite Malt - Help Needed

Glen Grant malt 1962 signatory is very hard to find at around 200 pounds a bottle but well worth hunting down

Re: Your Favourite Malt - Help Needed

Probably end up sorry for asking, however, isn't there an element of "Emperors new clothes" about such expensive bottles of booze (Wine or Spirits). $8000 for a bottle of brandy is pretty steep.... I assume you can't just order a single drink from it?

In many cases the bottle is unlikely to ever be opened... how do you know it's not just filled with cold tea?

Dunno the case here, but I have read about places where they do indeed sell some seriously expensive stuff by the glass, including wine. I believe you get what amounts to a thimblefull for about £60 of a wildly dear bottle of vino. Suppose if that thimblefae is 10mls then you'd get 70 out of a bottle so that would cover something up to 4 grand...

I can't tell the difference between a £15 or £30 bottle of wine but it's easy from £3 to £7 or £7 to £15. I can't imagine there's much difference from £15 - £20 up.

Re: Your Favourite Malt - Help Needed

Port Ellen if you can get it or Caol Ila are both excellent Island malts - have that great iodine taste about them. £100-200 a bottle, maybe more depending on the year.

Toss up between Laphroaig, a 10year+ Macallan or the one I have the now, a 17 year old Robert Burns distilled in Arran.

Re: Your Favourite Malt - Help Needed

I wouldn't claim to be an expert but like everyone that has a taste, I have my favourites. Like a few of the lads on here I'm into the Islay whiskies, Laphroaig being my top choice. Also enjoy a Talisker, Highland Park, Bruichladdich and Glenmorangie.

I guess to make it authentic, one would want to see all four major distilling areas represented appropriately.
