Government could still sell off its loans and mortgages to get its money back. Basically asset strip it. Screw the shareholders - it part of the risk of share ownership.

His mortgage is with Northern Rock as well. And if that doesn't save you, then at least you'll be able to take comfort in the fact that he's in the mess with you.

Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman, has today written to the Chancellor asking why it appeared that Granite held Northern Rock’s best mortgages, saddling the taxpayer with the worst. He likened the arrangement to "asset-stripping".

"In simple terms, what seems to have happened is that (Granite's) bond holders, who have the benefit of the best security the bank can offer, are being elevated above the taxpayer," Mr Cable wrote.

"In effect, there has been an asset-stripping operation designed to protect this segment of the bank’s activities while the taxpayer is being left with the poor quality assets: unsecured loans and high risk mortgages."
