Top clubs consider overseas games

I think if this happens it could have massive implications for the first-class game throughout. An interesting idea that will surely have it's critics too. it's been happening with the NHL for a little time now.

Where is football going?

"The English Premier League is considering playing some matches overseas, BBC Sport has learned.

At a meeting in London on Thursday, all 20 clubs agreed to explore a proposal to extend the season to 39 games.

Those 10 extra games would be played at venues around the world, with cities bidding for the right to stage them.

It is understood the additional fixtures could be determined by a draw but that the top-five teams could be seeded to avoid playing each other.

It is unlikely that any decision will be taken before the Premier League's annual summer meeting in June.

Should the proposal get the go-ahead, cities in Asia, Middle East and North America are likely to show a strong interest in hosting the extra games.

BBC Sport believes there would be five venues, with two games - on a Saturday and Sunday - taking place at each one."

Re: Top clubs consider overseas games

I know that the NFL & NBA have played one off games overseas but this idea is just idiotic. Can you imagine if the 39th game ended up being a championship/relegation decider-bet the money grabbing clubs would be regretting their descision then.

So fixture congestion is a problem except where there's extra cash to be made.

English football has completely lost its soul. It is now just a corporation looking to expand into other markets. I can't be arsed with the Premiership these days.

Re: Top clubs consider overseas games

Interesting snippet on TV this morning of Bobby Charlton talking about the days of the Busby Babes. He stated that when he first went to Old Trafford as a youngster, Busby explained to him about the very working class area near the ground and how it was their (the players) job to provide a little fun and entertainment into their lives on a Saturday afternoon.

Bobby said that this made the players feel like they were part of the community and very much part of the community's club, (with the emphasis on club).

How far we have come from that now. Ironically it could be argued that Manchester United have been the club more than any other to promote the soccer 'global brand'.

Re: Top clubs consider overseas games

The clubs complain about fixture congestion and players on international duty coming back tired and now they are looking into this it really is a just a money making exercise and they dont give a toss about the ordinary working class fan. When you see what the premier league has turned into i am sure the likes of Shankly,Paisley and Busby are turning in there graves.

How long before English clubs start to be referred to as franchises?

I'd be highly surprised if Rangers and Celtic aren't sniffing around this idea. It could certainly have an effect on Scottish football too in some way. Positive or negative according to your point of view.

There was some reporting of Celtic wanting to take a Celtic V Hearts fixture overseas last year...

It's a ridiculous idea. However, for me both Celtic & Rangers can GTF wherever they want. One way ticket.

I reckon that Ireland would be the first place they think of M, sorry to say. Man Ure v Liverpoo at Croker, it would sell out in minutes.

Better one would be Celtc v the Huns in Newry or Derry, it could set the peace process back millenniums!!

I'd say it would be more like the New Lansdowne Road. The FAI/IRFU will be looking for stuff like this to help pay for it

Re: Top clubs consider overseas games

I find this quite amusing actually. Sure Man U v Liverpool would get big bids and possibly end up somewhere like New York or Beijing, but what about Bolton against Middlesbrough? Where would that be played? Fort William who bid £2.89 to be paid with glass cheques? So far up their own arse believing their own hype it's untrue.

It won't happen needless to say since it would completely fuck the integrity of the league due to differing fixtures between sides.
