find these kind of stories really depressing. Why is Scotland so shit? every time you hear a depressing statistic on the news, whether its about violence, crime, murder, suicide, bad health, poor education, obesity, Scotland is always way above the UK average and amongst the worst in Europe/the world. why? what is it about us Scots?

Probably got something to do with our sensible attitude to boozing,the complete lack of poverty,the mild climate and the fact that there is so many weegies.

Having said that,our education system is envied by other places,isnt it?

It's not scotland its Glasgow and the west of scotland that are bumping these stories and statistics up.

Its not. It does pretty well. Glasgow's got some lovely areas as well.

They're not as bad here though are they? Most weedgies i've met/worked with are overweight/alcoholics/habitual drug users, not to say that there isn't the fair share of those on this side of the country but by comparison the wests 'problems' far outweigh ours

The problems of some areas of Glasgow are certainly much worse than anything Edinburgh has to deal with... I know, I have a flat through there and the areas surrounding it are frankly frightening....

I travelled through some of them at night.. they looked ok during the day.. not necessarily somewhere you'd like to stay, but at least somewhere you'd stop your car at a set of traffic lights... at night it was like a scene from escape from New York! Social depravation like that breeds from within, what future do people growing up in such surroundings have?

Are these figures per capita, or just totals?

If not it would be interesting to divide whatever figures each city has by its population.

If these are per capita figures, then all I can say is that there can't be a very equitable way of dividing the wealth around Glasgow!

There was a world quality of life index just a couple of weeks or so ago with over 600 cities ranked.

Edinburgh was 10th in the world and Glasgow was a surprisingly high 30 odds.

Personally they deserve what they get through there. They continually vote Labour who have done nothing for the place for generation............except pay half of them incapacity benefit !

Its a vicious cycle. There are now so many lapsed into a life of leisure and relying on their incapacity they would newver vote for any progressive party that might actually encourage them to work.
