Linux Linux...................

Viewing the forums on a Linux computer! It's nice. Feels a bit odd to begin with, but the feeling soon passes and it's kinda right......................

WIndows killed itself on my old laptop and the only way to keep it working was a fresh install, and I happened to have some Linux.

Impressed thus far.

Anyone else taken this particular plunge?

Aye, Me
Fuckin nightmare though
Cannie get my mobile to download 'cos all the software is Windows compliant.
Cannie burn discs as Nero won't work
Cannie play games as they need plug-ins and when I download the plug-ins they don't work
Cannie view e-mail attachments or movies as they're all windows complaint
Lost all my music, essential files containing scanned legal documents, fuckin everything in fact

Saving up for a new Windows based computer as this thing is pants.
The only good thing it can do is get on t'internet so I can visit the 'Bounce'

That sounds pretty rough mate! Fortunately all stuff is on external hard drives! It would seem though that the guys coding this stuff are sorting out the issues, I have a new version of a popular distribution and seems to have something to replace most Windows programs.

Re: Linux...................

I've dabbled with SUSE Linux and Ubunto. I liked them. I liked that it seemed more stable and efficient than Windows. XP is by far the most stable MS OS but Vista is proving to be a nightmare. I believe Linux is now a viable alternative to Windows although there are some compatibility issues with Office type files. There are also a few web sites that are pretty hostile to browsers other than IE. Linux can be a bit tricky but I find that it is just a case of it being a bit different. I'm dabbling with Mac now and running a Win XP virtual machine on the box. A challenge indeed.

Re: Linux...................

Best operating system known to man. Secure stable and free. All my kit works no problem, and thats using the 64bit version. Vista 64 and Xp 64 were much more problamatic. If you haven't tried it download a ubuntu live CD, you can boot from it and try it out (all be it slowly ) without installing on your hard drive.
Openoffice which comes included (along with a zillon other apps) is compatible with nearly all MSoffice formats. You cant get virus's or spyware. Best of all is the philsophy of free software which you can copy to friends with no charge. Free as in speech and beer.

Re: Linux...................

Why don't ya just get a Mac? Especially an Intel one, and then you could have both XP/Vista and OSX on it. Dual bootability, I think they call it.

There are a couple of tools available on the Mac that will let you run Mac OS AND XP/Vista (or any other guest OS) at the same time. I've been using Parallels on a MacBook Pro but it does have a few flaws.

Re: Linux...................

No need for Parallels, it's all part of Leopard now.

Point of the thread was that Windows is shit. We all know that. But by investing in an Intel Mac and operating multiple OS's you're basically running a machine that will last easily ten years and more.

That is, if you look after it. A cheap pc will go caput pretty soonish, you get what you pay for. And there's plenty of Intel Macs on eBay.

As far as I was aware, you needed to have Parallels to have both Leopard and guest OS (XP) to run at the same time. That is different to booting into one or the other.

I was thinking of BootCamp, which was a 3rd-party collaboration, that's now integrated into Leopard.

If you still need Parallels, then I wasn't aware of that.

That's fair enough. I fancy having it on one of my own Macs, just to see what it's like.

That's free? Apologies then, sir. How satisfied are you with it?

Edit: Actually, I've only just remembered to say that we've only got PowerPC Macs in this house, no Intel ones. Which, I assume is required for it?
