Interesting One

Husbands with multiple wives have been given the go-ahead to claim extra welfare benefits following a year-long Government review.

Even though bigamy is a crime in Britain, the decision by ministers means that polygamous marriages can now be recognised formally by the state, so long as the weddings took place in countries where the arrangement is legal.

The outcome will chiefly benefit Muslim men with more than one wife, as is permitted under Islamic law. Ministers estimate that up to a thousand polygamous partnerships exist in Britain, although they admit there is no exact record.

If it is illigal, then supporting such a situation IMO would be doing no justice at all, Even if the marrages took place in a country where it is legal, we could find that there is an influx coming in to use the welfare state off the UK

In the long run, I wonder which will actually cost the tax payer more.

I can't believe that we let anyone immigrate without the means to support themselves.

Though foreign footballers aren't welcome, it appears.

Re: Interesting One

what i think is interesting is this;

how can a society that legally allows gay marriage (in all but name) outlaw polygamy.

surely people have a right to any form of marriage they so chose?

This is a benefits issue, though.

i know, but if you tested the benefits issue legally it would inevitably come to the point i made. hence, i suspect, a preemptive move like this.

Don't have any issue with civil ceremonies for bufties. Doesn't do any harm and if it makes them happy. I also think its wrong that they were discriminated against in terms of next of kin rules. I actually don't have that much of an issue with folk having lots of wifes as long as they don't ask me to pay for it.

i tend to agree. everybody should be able to name a beneficiary other than the state.

as for polygamy - less expensive than single mums i suspect and more fecund than non-reproductive arrangements, so probably a better financial investment for you than others.

i also agree with your implied distinction between law and personal liberty. a person should be able to consider themselves married to their dog if they want to. legal recognition is another matter and not a question of individual rights.
