FAO Anyone involved in a charity.....

I am currently looking to do some Charity work for my Duke of Edinburgh/ Queens Badge award. Due to possibly changing jobs and the resulting inability to commit for a long period I have been unable to find much, and now need to clock up 30 hours of service in just over a month. If anyone has anything that I could get involved in or any information that could help, i would be very grateful if you could PM me.

Thanks.

What sort of thing are you thinking of doing?
Not sure we could provide 30 hours (although if you'd mentioned it before the recent trip to Ukraine ).

Re: FAO Anyone involved in a charity.....

Anything really, as long as I'm qualified to do it. Can't drive (although I am hoping to start lessons soon as a part of my DOE course), so distance is a bit of a limiting factor, making bus journeys the only real option. I work between 4-8pm Monday to Thursday, and Sundays 6am untill 12pm, and I have other work related to the course I'm doing Fridays 7.30pm till 10pm. Charity shops are ideal, because I could work morning shifts, but if there is anything that fits in with what I'm already commited to, above, then I have no problem doing some work for them. If someone is looking for short term cover, but could get me the minimum 30 hours, that would be ideal, but if a longer commitment is needed, I would be more than happy to continue on for as long as I'm needed.

The reason I need to do it over the next month is due to the fact that I was planning to become an apprentice electrician, and after bottling the test first time round in the summer, I applied again and wasn't given an oppertunity to re sit the aptitude test (which was very basic, and I can't believe i failed it first time round) until the end of November. However, at the test, I was led to believe that my details would be passed on to local employers should i pass, but despite reaching the required standard, as of yet I have recieved no offers, or replys of any kind in fact, that could clarify my situation. However, due to the fact that the collage courses begin at the start of February, I have come to the conlcusion that i will not be offered anything, at least until the summer, and therefore, I have been waiting around for nothing.(Typical of a Hibs fan really!)

I am based in the Northfield area, and anything that can be reached by bus from there, I would be delighted to participate in. Thanks for taking the time to post, those who already have, and if you have foundcan't help, thanks for taking an interest anyway - i will continue to try Volunteer Scotland.

Thanks.

I was always under the impression that doing work for charity was doing something you believed in, regardless of the rewards or awards

Hence why I would rather be doing something that I could be enthusiastic about - for example, I tried to volunteer to teach children with learning difficulties to read, however, I never got a reply (I think the reason was I had applied too late, or perhaps that the Email address I was given, was out of date) and problems arose with the apprenticeship issue, meaning that i couldn't commit for the whole course - it would be wrong of me to pull out, but I feel have to prioritise work. I apololgise if that seems cynical or selfish.
