Not trying to do down Sir Edmunds achievement in any way.. Everest had claimed many lives before he made it to the top, so it was obviously no cakewalk.... however, how much harder must it have been for his sherpa - Tensing Norgay who had to do the climb and carry the heavier load to get there... he aint been knighted! Is he even still alive?

I liked Sir John H-J. He was a plain spoken hard nosed businesman who told several companies a few home truths that they didn't want to see for themselves and managed to turn around a fair part of British industry. RIP.

Tenzing Norgay was awarded the George Medal for his part in the expedition.

He done well out of his tremendous achievement and he was Internationally recognised.

Here's a couple of his quotes -

"If it is a shame to be the second man on Mount Everest, then I will have to live with this shame."

"It has been a long road...From a mountain coolie, a bearer of loads, to a wearer of a coat with rows of medals who is carried about in planes and worries about income tax."—Tenzing Norgay

Tenzing died of a bronchial condition in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India in 1986, aged 71.

Was there not questions that he made it to the top before Hillary and therefore the first man.

Re: Hillary - Harvey-Jones Dead

Norgay always supported the fact that Hillary reached the top first.

Currently doing a raft of stories for Radio New Zealand on Sir Ed as el kiwis like to call him.

Seems a top bloke. Originally an Auckland beekeeper who was always modest about "knocking the b@stard off".

He subsequently set up a trust to raise funds for the impoverished sherpas and their families in Himalayas.

He was still working to try and get better schools and hospitals right up until his death.

Nepalese from the Himalayan region will be gathering on Monday in Kathmandhu to honour him - a couple of thousand expected.

Also set up science stations at South pole and led an expedition to find the source of the ganges when he couldnae handle the high altitude climbing anymore.

As Uncle Bulgaria said Tenzing always maintained that Hillary was 'first up' and they both remained best friends until Tenzing's death.

Quite a funny wee story is that all the photographs of the conquerors at the summit are of Sherpa Norgay, this was due to the fact that he hadn't been shown how to operate the Camera and Hillary didn't feel that it was the right place or conditions on top of Mt Everest to be 'giving him the course'.

Used to enjoy listening to Harvey-Jones on Question Time etc. If there were more business folk like him the world IMO would be a better place. Quite a witty fella he was. RIP.
