Xmas Traditions in Germany

In Germany kids open their Xmas pressies on 24th December every year. Makes me wonder if they're taking the beach towel philosophy a bit too far. Also, parents in Germany tell their kids that their pressies are delivered by the baby Jesus himself rather than Santa. Whats that all about? What did Santa Claus ever do to get the sack in Germany?

They beat them to it in Holland. The Dutch kids get their presents from Sinterklaas on the 5th December. The adults then celebrate two Christmas Days (25th & 26th December).

It was the Sinterklaas tradition that the Dutch settlers took to New Amsterdam (later New York) only for the Americans to turn it into Santa Claus.

Having lived in Germany for near on 9 years,i never quite got my head round this either! Christmas day on the 24th! I believe the Germans call in Weinachten. I have never heard of baby Jesus delivering presents though.. In Germany, they have Saint Nicolaus. The children leave out their shoes for St. Nicolaus and his helper 'Black Petra', and depending on whether they have been good or not, the good children get gifts, toys and sweets, whilst the bad children have 'whipping rods' (bundles of small sticks) put intheir shoes, so their parents can give them a good walloping with them

then you find most German families go to church, where they take an orange with a red ribbon and a candle and do the whole nice religious thing, and then they leave the oranges for Jesus as a present. then they all go home and get mangled and eat dinner.

French folk do that too. Christmas eve is much bigger than Christmas day.

Fireworks displays on Christmas Eve too IIRC? Always fancied spending one Christmas in Norway, everything there seems more "Christmassy" and less commercialised than here. Would love to go back and visit the candle factory at Birkjedalstunet as well - their Ris Krem was to die for.

AAH food of the gods, man. A Drilling Supervisor offshore once saw me dishing up my bowl of said delicacy and asked "Are you going to eat that or ski down it?" I could eat that three times a day every day.

I used to have the recipe for it (the Danish version anyway) but lost it. If you do happen to have it, would be much appreciated.

Tonight (24th) is the big night here. The English speaking world is pretty much alone in making the 25th the big day. As far as I'm aware even in Scotland this is fairly recent. Anyone got more info on this

Here in The Basque Country the kids are visited not by Father Christmas but by the Olentzero, a dour-pussed coal miner who climbs onto balconies and leaves presents for the deserving.

IIRC in parts of the Basque Country (Donostia) I was told there was another Xmas pressies day on or about January 6th. Have youse got two deliveries there, or is one Spanish and one Basque?

Gora Santa!

I don't know about that but here in Bizkaia the kids do ok anyway.
First of all you've got the Olenzero vs. Santa thing with the pro-Basques going for the former and the Españolistas for the latter. This must take some explaining to 5 year olds and no doubt results in presents from both in some families.
Then on Jan 6th, as in Spain, the 3 magic kings come along with another lot and the adults have another excuse to get pished.

it is. protestant scotland did not celebrate xmas - hence the big deal we make of hogmanay. as i understand it, it was popularised again under victoria and albert, with the latter's germanic affection for it.

Hogmanay versus Xmas? Its like Salmond versus Brown. No contest.
