A political re-alignment of the press in Scotland

It seems that in January the Scottish Daily Express, The Daily Star and the Scottish Sunday Express are all going to align themselves with the cause of Scottish Independence. The behind the scenes talks have supposedly been concluded with Alex Salmond. How do folk think this will affect the support for Independence in the run up to a proposed referendum in 2010? With the last couple of opinion polls showing steady increase in support for Independence since May (40% in favour now) are these signs that the tide is turning?

Saw the system 3 40% poll in the Sunday Herald last week. Much closer to the truth than that rogue poll of 23% a few weeks ago.

Hadn't heard of the Express decison but if true unquestionably a sign of going with the flow.

Sex industry not allowed a political opinion then? Luckily most SNP voters aren't Sunday Post readers so I wouldn't worry.

I don't think the SNP would be too concerned if The Daily Express and Daily Star were against them so i see no reason to be concerned if they go for them!

IMO too much importance is given to the political stance of Newspapers. Also, readers influenced by obvious political bias such as the Daily Record or Daily Mail are idiots.

Cant see me rushing out to buy any of those papers just cos they support independence but I get the feeling that the support for independence is being built on more solid foundations this year and these newspapers changing tack is simply a commercial realisation that there's sales to be had. As you say its all to the good (unless you were a unionist, as its looking more like shoogly nail time for them).

Suspect that at some stage the Sunday Herald may swing over to independence too, instead of sitting on the fence wanting "more powers" for Holyrood. Their Labourite political editors (such as Iain McWhirter) have been getting starry-eyed over Alex Salmond for months now. The rest of the Scottish press are unionist arsewipes.

No me neither but they would present a positive case to a readership previously fed a diet of doom and gllom. Could only be a good thing.

That would defo be a coup.
