Re: this is what sport is for

the kid's not playing in a levelled down environment. he's had one moment in life where he'll ever get a chance to do something like that, and he's broken his school's scoring record.

but more to the point, what i was referring to was the reaction of his fellow players and students. that's something that sport can achieve that's really rather marvellous.

You don't get that hman interest side from the paralymics? I do. Its all very inspiring and great to see sport used to raise esteem. All very liberating.

Re: this is what sport is for

Watched it with a wee tear im my eye.. then I thought, why?

The laddie did brilliantly and maybe if the coach had actually given him a chance in trial games (instead of making him a charity case in his last ever chance to play) he could have had him breaking all kinds of scoring records for years instead of 20 points in 4 minutes court time, imagine if hed played for a whole season!!!

So although the coach thinks he's a good guy in the video I think he's a knob end for not realising the potential he had at his disposal for so long!

Re: this is what sport is for

I've got to agree with Col here. I've seen that video before and I'm not sure what to make of it? I hear people saying they don't want to be considered 'special' and they want to be accepted as doing the things we all do then these 'and finally' stories come along. It strikes me as one of those feelgood hyped stories that the USA loves. A story which grows wings. Even on this very thread egb says he broke the school's scoring record...apologies if I'm wrong but I can't see where that is the case?

The boy is autistic and obviously loves basketball and the team he helps. Being autistic will not necessarily stop him from being an excellent basketball shooter. In fact it's obvious he is a good shooter, it appears it's only his lack of height that stopped him being a regular player. Yes, it's great to see the wee guy get a chance to join his mates and do good. It's actually great to see any wee guy join in and do great. I just don't see where the hyperbole comes from. He's now met President Bush (there's a surprise), been on Oprah, The Today Show, met Magic Johnson and Columbia Pictures have obviously beaten Disney in the race since they're to make the life movie of him. My cynicism is all directed at 'The Walton's' mentality so cherished in the USA surrounding Jason McElwain and not at the boy himself.

It's one of those stories that makes me think it's more about society's needs than the subject's needs.

Why do we need to look so deeply into things?

Watching that made me feel quite emotional. Fantastic.

It depends what your motivation is. Reality or escapism. Emotion or cold logic. Truth or spin. If you only want the surface then don't look deeply into it and enjoy the emotion of it all. I can recommend 'Lassie Come Home' too.

Before I come across as an unfeeling bastard, there are things in life you can look into deeply and still find hugely emotional. For me that is my preference. Every thread should have a cynic just to stop it running away into Little-House-On-The-Prairie-Land!
