SFA President George Peat was stunned to discover McLeish - who had accompanied him and Smith on the flight from the World Cup draw in South Africa - had headed straight from Heathrow for talks in Birmingham.

The SFA had denied Birmingham permission to speak to McLeish, so he was forced to resign.

In terminating his contract two days short of 10 months after accepting the chance to succeed Walter Smith, McLeish ended the shortest reign of any full-time manager in Scotland's history.

Peat revealed: "Alex did not mention the issue at all as we flew from Johannesburg to London. We had told Birmingham we were refusing them permission to talk to our manager. We had even been saying to Alex we would offer him an improved deal.

"Then, when Birmingham made their official approach, we wanted to leave it until we met today.

"At Heathrow, Alex told us he had other business and was heading elsewhere. By lunch-time, we received a fax signed by Alex tendering his resignation. He said it was with regret he was stepping down with immediate effect.

"Alex has broken his contract and is liable for compensation. But I think we all know that is picked up by the club."

Smith said he has not spoken to McLeish since they parted. His focus is now on finding the next man to lead Scotland.

Can naeone see his desire to be involved in day to day managerial duties, all this is a bit harsh IMO.
At least he didnt leave us in the middle of a campaign ala Smith.
