FWIW I would say ten months seems quite a lot for downloading kiddie porn. How long would you get for mugging someone or stabbing someone as your first offence?

Don't know the answer to the latter point dude but on your former point i have to disagree.

With such a sentence you'd be walking free after what 6 months? 6 months for playing a part (if there was no demand there would be no need for the supply..) in young innocent children subjected to the most awful sex abuse..

For me it's rape. What's the sentence on rape on your first offence i wonder..

It depends what he was looking at, I suppose. I don't know what the pictures were of.

I agree that his crime is disgusting and should be taken very seriously but in dealing with crime you have to have levels to that seriousness. Treating this crime as rape or child abuse would turn the law in to a joke. What would be next, people getting charged with assault for watching a happy slapping video on YouTube? How would you treat the person who supplied the images, the same or harsher? What about the actual perpetrator? Would you only give him the same sentence as the guy who just looked at an image?

Incidentally, more importanly than locking the guy up, I'd make sure he got years of professional treatment as a paedophile.
