They never gave their lives for this country. They died for goverment policy. Most were conscripts and had no choice either. All a waste of lives imo.

They all died in vain. The poor get sent off to die and the rich(who benefit from wars) sit at home. All those who fought deserve to be remembered-but so suggest that they died for their country is a fallacy.They died for goverment policy. Was pissed off at the BBC this morning....they mentioned conflicts involving British Forces since WW2..Falklands,Iraq,Afganistan...they never mentioned Northern Ireland..a travesty. Plus its not just the dead who should be remembered, all those who fought in a warzone should be given respect, some still are fighting the battle in their heads(and i speak from personal experience)

I agree but it must be remembered all the guys who volunteered some even lying about their age to do so , not all were conscripted . I agree everyone involved in a warzone should have our full respect too .
I'm not sure the world wars were much about foreign policy though

I could go on but like Spleesh said the thread has deviated from the main topic.

My thoughts are with my Great Grandad, Grandad, Great Uncle,Uncle & Dad, all of whom served in armed forces from WW1 to N.I.

Poppy Day is about remembering the dead and their bravery. It isn't about remembering, or even approving of, a war or the reasons behind it - it is about individual soldiers. You don't have to agree with any policy, military leader or government to remember the rank and file.

That aside, if you think that getting Hilter out of Poland wasn't worth five years of my grandfather's life (he was a volunteer) in a POW camp then you must know something that I don't.

If you listen to commentators & read the press they bang on about how these lads gave thier lives for their country & freedom etc..but according to ex soldiers i know they say they fought for their mates alongside them. When they were getting shot/bombed etc they didnt think about the bigger picture.thats what i was getting at.

Hilter was indeed removed from Poland but he was replaced by an equally evil man in Stalin. Poland was the only country to fight on the winning side and still manage to lose.(and also the only country to be banned from the victory parade)

I'm pretty sure that's the nature of war and is what soldiers from any country will tell you when it comes to the crunch.

And it is the soldiers and their mates we are remembering, not the war or the politics around it.

Saying that, it would have been difficult to defeat Hitler without an Army, maybe we could have found some Boy Scouts and a few Hibs Casuals. In fact, maybe we shouldn't have bothered

I agree. But this thread turns into a hot potato every year - I'm remembering our heroes and heroins by stating my view when I think their bravery - and the results of their bravery - are being insulted.

Now that I think about it, I take it you have the same view of the Spanish Civil War Alexi?

I assume you mean me?? Where did i insult them?? I respect everything they did...my familys blood was spilled in your country. But i have lived with the side effects of war and it aint pretty. i was merely pionting out that there is a lot of guff talked by the media about why these young men fight in wars.
